Daenerys Targaryen of Game Of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5 (courtesy Helen Sloan / HBO)
There will be no complaints about "not enough deaths!" after the penultimate episode of Sunday Game Of Thrones as after the "Battle of Winterfell". There will certainly be some complaints – it's sort of the main activity of watching GOT this last season, and The Bells offered a lot to complain about – but if we see characters with which we spent eight years doing their end, that's what you wanted, this episode left you satisfied. (She will also incredibly occupy our counter of the dead, Shelly Tan, as she tries to gather all those poor commoners of King's Landing who were completely burned by Drogon.)
The episode started with (for the most part) the rooting of Daenerys. capture King's Landing and we ended up feeling sympathy for Cersei and seeing Daenerys doing things that even Cersei would not even have imagined. You could say that it was a good turn, or that it was simply a more disconcerting decision making. In any case, we have one more Sunday night.
– Full Daenerys Mad Queen
Daenerys' deeds were not completely shocking because the allusions piled up quickly. during the last episodes. Now, should some hints from the last two episodes prevail over the dominant narrative arc of the central heroic character of the series that has been built in the past eight seasons? This is a question that only George R. R. Martin can answer. But he was not ready to answer it, which means David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had to weigh in and decide that yes, Daenerys becoming a soulless killing machine is the way to go. You can decide for yourself whether it is #Canon or #NotCanon.
Missandei's beheading seemed to be doing something to Daenerys last week and his growing imbalance was certainly noticed by Varys. The episode opens in Dragonstone, where the Daenerys team prepares its onslaught on King's Landing, while Varys writes a letter (the unknown addressee) tries to publicize Jon's lineage Snow and that he is the real heir to the Iron Throne.
When Jon arrives, Varys greets him and tries once again to convince Jon that he should be king because he is a good man and that the Targaryen have a history of madness in their family. "Whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods throw a coin," says Varys, the famous old saying that we all remember, since it appeared in the reel "Previously on Game Of Thrones "a few minutes earlier. "I still do not know how his piece landed, but I'm quite sure of yours," said Varys, but Jon still does not, his stubbornness again appearing as his character trait.
Daenerys was hiding for two days without communication or food. She is skinny and looks a little defeated when Tyrion visits her and she knows that she has been betrayed. By Varys, yes, but really by a whole group of people – by Tyrion because he spoke to Varys of Jon's parents; by Sansa, who told Tyrion; and by Jon himself, who told his brothers (not really) Stark even after Daenerys asked him not to do it. Tyrion apologized saying that his intentions were good and that he wanted, with Varys, simply a better world, but we know what will happen tomorrow.
This is confirmed when Varys came out of his office by Gray Worm and walked outside in the middle of the night. . While Varys faces Daenerys and Jon, a distraught Tyrion approaches and admits that it is he who has put him out. "I hope I deserve that, I really want it," says Varys. Tyrion is obviously upset by the last moments of his old friend. Daenerys pronounces the death penalty and, with the most tired "Dracarys" that she can muster, Drogon embodies the Whispers Master. RIP, Varys, you only wanted what was best for the realm, so it's probably for the best that you do not see what would follow. As Varys becomes a pile of charred remains, Jon glances at Dany. "Man, I hope this guy was not right for her."
When Jon goes to visit Daenerys soon after, she chastises him. saying that this is exactly what she had warned if it would happen if Jon revealed to Sansa the secret of himself. "She killed Varys as much as me," she says, which probably would not stand up in court, but I'm not a lawyer. Her insecurities are visible because she admits that more people in Westeros love Jon than herself and that fear is all that she has here. Jon spits one of his six lines that he is able to say at this point ("You'll always be my queen") and his aunt tries to get out with him, but he's not there. really more, which seems to only push Daenerys further down the crazy path.
During the final preparation of his fight, Tyrion pressured Daenerys to show his mercy, as far as possible, for the inhabitants of King's Landing to be innocent, just as those whom she had released to Mereen, settling for hostages. taking of the tyrant. Cersei's supporters will surrender if they know that the battle is lost and the sound of the bells will be the sign of the cancellation of the attack. She does not seem convinced and gives Tyrion news of her other brother. Jaime was captured while he was trying to cross their lines and was trying to return to Cersei one last time. "The next time you fail, this will be the last time you fail," she told Tyrion, what she seems to have said at every episode of the season.
At dawn, both sides are ready to fight. But in another, more precise way, Drogon and the Daenerys army are extremely ready for battle and Cersei's forces are hopeless. The Qyburn Scorpion, aka Big Bow and Arrow, who was so successful in defeating Rhaegal misses the goal when Drogon arrives and he quickly fires all of Euron Greyjoy's iron fleet and all his destructive devices. of dragons, destroying the watery force of Cersei. 19659003] His land forces do not get much better. One of the funniest side-tricks of the season was the brutal introduction of the Golden Company, these 20,000 mercenary soldiers (but no elephants, alas) led by one of the most iconic characters Game Of Thrones Harry Strickland. His main contribution was to stay outside the city gates, waiting for the battle, but Drogon then burned the city from the inside, leaving Harry to fetch a worm spear. RIP, Harry Strickland, sorry for your death as the man of the least interesting name of the Seven Kingdoms
Almost as soon as Jon, Gray Worm and their soldiers entered the city, the battle is over. Cersei's forces are submerged and, soon enough, they throw their swords and the bells of surrender begin to ring across the city. Jon is relieved. Cersei, who had a bird's eye view of the destruction of her location in the red dungeon, begins to cry, knowing that it's over for her. Tyrion is briefly happy, but that's before Dany takes off on Drogon and flies towards Cersei – Drogon casts a shadow over King's Landing like that of Bran's vision – and begins to brighten the entire city, capitulating or not surrender.
The ringing of the bells triggered something in her, or was it just the plan forever? She just told Jon that fear is the only way she can govern in Westeros. Tyrion begged her not to destroy the entirety of King's Landing because it was clear that she wanted to sorry everyone and everything that was happening in the city. The question of whether the bells triggered it must therefore be debated, but a complete and clinical destruction of King's Landing – we are talking about expanding the radius of fire-breathing chaos through concentric circles – is next. It also encourages Dany's remaining forces to ignore any decorum on the battlefield, starting with Gray Worm, who launches a spear at an enemy fighter who has dropped his weapon and then begins a vengeful frenzy fueled by revenge.
Jon Snow is obviously appalled by this behavior, as innocent women and children are slaughtered by Daenerys while she commands Drogon and his own soldiers. The murder continues unabated until the city is plunged into the dust. Whether madness or a simple strategy, Daenerys is now a conqueror with the blood of thousands of blood on his hands.
– The Lannisters remain united
Destiny seems to be one of the themes that emerge in these last chaotic episodes. Tyrion remains fully committed to his brother, releasing Jaime after his capture by Dany forces on the outskirts of King's Landing before the battle. Tyrion hopes to convince Jaime to tell Cersei to surrender before it's too late for them all, but Jaime does not want to accept the obvious fact that the battle will be short, decisive and not to the advantage of his sister. Tyrion's rescue plan is to help her brothers and sisters escape, making sure that a canoe will wait for them in front of the secret exit of the Red Keep, where Jaime and Cersei can rest. to embark at Pentos to raise their baby incest.
Jaime and Tyrion share a sincere goodbye. "Without you, I would never have survived my childhood," said Tyrion to his brother. "You were the only one who did not treat me like a monster, you were everything I had." There are tears, there is a hug and it is the last time that they will see each other again.
Jaime's return to Cersei was hijacked after failing to cross the King's Landing main gate, but still managed to collide. Euron Greyjoy at the edge of the cliffs. I do not know why they needed to fight hard, especially under the circumstances, but I'll just say that Euron is a major fool. "If you kill another king before dying, they will sing for you forever," Euron mocked, but that does not work very well because Jaime is like, "Which king?" Euron boasts of having slept with Cersei and the battle is underway, and even while fighting for his life, Jaime surely thinks that it is impossible for this idiot to place himself at the same level as mad king Aegon Targaryen, you like it.
Go to the end and when Euron stabs Jaime twice on the side, Jaime shoves a sword into the bowels of Euron. That makes Euron, but his last words are: "I am the man who killed Jaime Lannister!" Good for you? RIP, Euron, you've explained a lot what's wrong with these last two seasons.
Seeing Drogon destroying King's Landing, Cersei lived under the sign of emotion. She started the battle with confidence, denied when she said that a "good shot" from Euron would bring Drogon down (leaving poor Qyburn to tell him that there were no more shots to be fired), was accepted when she finally left Qyburn the mountain took her underground to avoid the ruined infrastructure, then fell back on an abject fear when she was left alone after the mountain killed Qyburn (more details below). below) and rushed to what she hoped to be safe ground.
This fear would be somewhat counterbalanced by the relief in her last moments when she will see her seriously injured brother come back. Their attempt at escape is made impractical by a pile of rocks that has blocked the exit, leaving them in a desperate situation at the bottom of a red dungeon that is collapsing. Our last moments with Cersei show her that she is scared and vulnerable in a way we have never seen before. Is this another example of absurd behavior out of the character in these latest episodes, or just a person with the coldest outside who ends up dropping guard just before he dies? I will give the benefit of the doubt and go with it. It's still a little shocking for Cersei Lannister, who has delivered so many memorable lines throughout the series, that his last line is "I do not like that."
"Nothing else matters, only we", Jaime tells his sister before everything collapses and that they die in each other's arms . Regression of Jaime and his return to Cersei after years in the opposite direction will not fail to cause concern, but it is in fact one of the most credible developments of these last episodes. Their love was one of the purest of the series.
– The Cleganebowl
This battle of the Clegane brothers – Sandor "The Hound" against Gregor "The Mountain" – had been coveted for so long and was dutifully stuck in just before the final. Would it have been better if this happened earlier and that it is given the chance to be one of the main elements of the plot of an episode? May be. Does not it really matter because the mountain is just a killing machine with no emotion and that it was obvious that they would both die when the battle went on take place? Very probably.
The Hound and Arya managed to get to King's Landing, both seeking to add one last shot (final?) To their account. As the situation deteriorated and it became clear that Drogon was burning the entire city and that everything was falling apart, the hound managed to convince Arya to take care of herself and her family. To fly, leaving him free to find his brother and to avenge Gregor's burn. and disfiguring his face as children.
The hound catches his brother while he, Qyburn and Cersei escape outside to protect themselves from the ruined destruction caused by Drogon. Cersei wants the mountain to ignore the dog and protect it, but the mountain has other ideas. And when Qyburn says, "Obey your queen!" he is beaten to death by the mountain, which is really not a way to treat the man who brought you back to life and gave you superhuman / undead / zombie abilities. RIP Qyburn, Your Ascent To Maester In The Queen's Hand Is A Source Of Inspiration For A Lot Of DC
Speaking Of These Undead Capabilities, They Include The Survival Of A Spear In The Chest And from a dagger in the eye, inflicted both on the hunting dog. on his big brother, which have no effect. In the meantime, every blow on the head that touched the dog was detrimental, as was the iconic gesture of the mountain, the really disgusting stabbing that made Oberyn Martell a regular of all the "dead lists" in the most macabre television "of recent years. ] When he realizes that traditional methods do not work, the Dog takes the initiative to kill his brother in the most symbolic way that one can imagine – a suicide suicide in a fire that makes rage, allowing him to defeat his greatest fear and defeat his greatest enemy at once. RIP Hound, I hope you have managed some ultimate curses before being burned.
– Arya survives in one way or another
Arya surrendered to King's Landing with the Hound for the purpose of killing Cersei, but abandoned this mission on the advice of his old friend once they both realized how dangerous it was inside the city limits. The problem was that she realized it too late and still had to avoid fire, rubble and panic to try to stay alive in the besieged city.
But stay alive, although it was much worse for wear. in the dust and blood. But coming out of the devastation, she finds a healthy white horse and is able to get out of the city. It's as logical as spending a few hundred White Walkers and ambushing the Night King. (Do you remember that guy, why am I strangely nostalgic for the Night King?)
– Questions about the Final Episode
How Jon Will Respond he face the death of Daenerys?
Will Sansa confront Daenerys about his actions or Jon's parents?
Will Tyrion remain loyal to Daenerys as a result of his actions?
Have we really seen the last great warrior, Harry Strickland?
