The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have marked history by becoming the first members of the royal family to visit Cuba in an official capacity.
The journey of Prince Charles and Camilla is expected to open a new chapter in relations between the United Kingdom and the communist state.
The couple attended a wreath laying ceremony for the Cuban national hero, essayist and poet Jose Marti.
They must join the president of the country for an official dinner.
Later this week, they will be joined by the Commonwealth Minister, Lord Ahmad, who travels to the country to represent the British government. [19659004] The presence of Lord Ahmad shows how Downing Street views the four-day visit to Cuba and its potential for developing new avenues with a country that has already begun the process of economic and societal openness.
After the couple had landed Sunday on the British ministerial plane RAF Voyager on Cuban soil, Cuban officials briefly shook hands before being taken to the wreath laying ceremony.
Prince Charles was immersed in silent contemplation. a large crown of roses was deposited at the open monument on the Revolution Square in Havana.
The royal couple arrived from Barbados, one of the five Commonwealth kingdoms that they visited.
St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada and St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines also participated in their tour.
