Qualcomm CEO says the company is about to solve legal problems with Apple

In an interview with Steve Mollenkopf, CEO of Qualcomm, CNBC's Mad Money Jim Cramer, host of the show, asked Mollenkopf to take stock of the ongoing conflict with Apple

"Can you give us a little update," Cramer asks, "because I want to buy an Apple 5G phone and want to have Qualcomm in it". This, of course, in reference to the ongoing legal battle between the two companies faces: Qualcomm claims royalties and claims patent infringement while Apple claims that royalties are excessive.

Qualcomm CEO: We are "at the door" of a resolution with Apple's CNBC

In response, Mollenkopf said that he would also like to see Qualcomm 5G in Apple phones. "The second half of this year and next year is when we are really about to find a resolution," he explains vaguely. That does not tell us much about whether (and when) Apple will launch a 5G phone and whether there will be a Qualcomm modem or not.

Again, Apple was late to adopt LTE at its first launch. Verizon has for the first time deployed its LTE network in 2010, but this one would finally arrive on an iPhone late 2012 on the iPhone 5. If we deviate from this part of the story, we will not see Apple adopts 5G before 2020 – the company tends to wait for these technologies to stabilize and become cheaper before integrating them into its products.

Perhaps with the decline in its iPhone sales, Apple can not afford not to be part of the 5G race. The 5G will be a huge selling point next year and Apple, which is not part of it, could further jeopardize future sales.
