Following the withdrawal of Gunn from The Guardians of the Galaxy, vol. 3 – while filming was scheduled for January 2019 – a growing number of Marvel fans asked Waititi to lead the project, which confirmed that he had retained Gunn's screenplay despite being removed from the director's chair. Waititi showed his support for Gunn's reinstatement in January and his disinterest in succeeding Gunn in Guardians declaring in February: "These are James's films."

News reports of Gunn's return to the franchise, said Friday that Disney never sought to meet with the replacement directors after Gunn's famous dismissal in July, but was quietly negotiating with the deposed filmmaker to reach an agreement allowing him to rehire him – thus responding to the wish of a petition. since then he has won nearly 500,000 signatures.

Gunn will first realize the script and direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. before returning to the Marvel cinematic universe with The Guardians of the galaxy, vol. 3 . Marvel has not announced release date yet.
