Rapping is a form of music famous worldwide. He came out of the street and could touch all layers of society. India has also experienced a scene of rappers and two of them well known in this category are Divine and Naezy.
Zoya Akhtar's GULLY BOY is vaguely inspired by their lives and has managed to generate a huge advertising hype. The presence of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt also added to the rumor. Does GULLY BOY manage to meet all expectations and become a complete artist? Or does he fail to impress? Analyze.
GULLY BOY tells the story of a shy city dweller whose life changes with his talent. Murad (Ranveer Singh) is a student living in a slum of Dharavi in Mumbai. He has relations with the fire Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a medical student from a Muslim family of the Orthodox higher caste. There is tension in Murad's house when her father Shakir (Vijay Raaz) takes a second wife, much to the chagrin of his mother Razia (Amruta Subhash). Meanwhile, one day the upcoming rapper MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) performs at Murad University and gets bogged down. After all, he's always been interested in rap. One day, MC Sher asks budding artists to meet him and Murad jumps on the occasion. MC Sher loves Murad and motivates him to rap publicly. Murad is hesitant at first, but it occurs in front of the crowd who thumbs up. MC Sher even makes it turn a video that becomes very popular. However, Murad is not able to pursue his pbadion full time. He has to put himself in his father's shoes and become a driver after he broke his leg. It also has a complex because of its social status. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
The story of Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar is promising. The character of Murad is very well written as well as the world around him. Many who had criticized Zoya for showing the world of the elite in ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA [2011] and DIL DHADKANE DO [2015] would certainly be surprised. The screenwriters also made sure the film was not just a rapper story. He talks about pbadion, aspiration and also makes an important comment about poverty, social strata, juvenile delinquency, polygamy, etc. The scenario of Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar is very effective. The film has been the subject of much research and it shows. Several sequences are powerful and they hit you hard. Even the humor comes out very well. The dialogues of Vijay Maurya add to the impact because they are acidic. Javed Akhtar writes Murad's poems with a charm all their own.
The leadership of Zoya Akhtar is still exemplary and she proves that she is worthy of placing her film in a diversified world and that she emerges victorious. However, the film has some asperities and we would like her to take care of it. The second half is quite long. In fact, it's like watching a three-hour movie. Some characters like Safeena and Sky (Kalki Koechlin) are interesting, but they do not have much to do and disappear easily in the center. In addition, the tone and theme of the film are such that it will not please the panindian public. The film features rap battle scenes where one is supposed to roast the opponent and become personal. Such scenes may disturb part of the audience.
GULLY BOY is not the usual artist and this becomes evident in the first scene itself. However, the events are very interesting and you aspire to the world of these characters. The entrance of Safeena adds to the pleasure and the sequence where she badault Albina, a girl who is interested in Murad, will make the house fall. Murad's struggles and his connection to MC Sher are also well described. Some scenes are exceptionally directed as the first performance of Murad. Another scene that stands out in the first half is when Murad had the idea of the song "Doori" in the car. Post interval, the interest drops a little. The film is stretched and also has far too many subplots. The highlight is fortunately when the film resumes beautifully. The film ends in beauty.
Ranveer Singh enters completely into the skin of his character. He is ten years older than Murad in real life and yet convincingly manages to play the role of a student. Even as a rapper, he seems to be a pro and not even once, he feels like playing the role. Also watch the scenes where he plays MC Sher's second violin in the first period. It's quite commendable for a main actor. Alia Bhatt is, to say the least, explosive. Her role would be loved and she is so good that we would like to have more time on the screen. Siddhant Chaturvedi makes his solid debut. It has a crucial part and we would surely talk about it. Kalki Koechlin leaves a great mark in a small role. Vijay Varma (Moeen) is satisfactory. Vijay Raaz is pretty cool and has an impact, especially in the pre-climax. Amruta Subhash is decent. Shrishti Shrivastava (Albina) is hilarious. Jyoti Subhash (Murad's grandmother) makes her presence felt in a crucial scene in the second half. Others are fine.
There are far too many songs in the movie and none of them are of the clbadic type, given the theme of the movie. But few of them stand out. 'Apna Time Aayega' stood out and takes the film to another level. "Mother Gully Mein" is energetic, while "Azadi" is fascinating. Doori is very touching. "Sher Aaya Sher" played at the entrance of MC Sher is decent. The background score is in sync with the movie.
Jay Oza's cinematography is magnificent and gives the film a beautiful appearance. Even in the final, Lensman's work adds to the effect. The costumes of Arjun Bhasin and Poornamrita Singh are elegant and realistic. The action of Manohar Verma and Sunil Rodrigues is also very real. The latter has choreographed the action scene of Alia Bhatt and it is one of the highlights of the film. The design of Suzanne Caplan Merwanji's production is authentic. The editing of Nitin Baid is elegant, but could have been more accurate in the second half.
Overall, GULLY BOY is a fun and moving artist who will certainly thrill young people and frequent urban audiences. At the box office, the four-day weekend will ensure a profitable business for its manufacturers.
