MADRID: Real Madrid will dismiss coach Julen Lopetegui after a 5-1 defeat by Barcelona's rival and former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte will replace him, the Spanish media reported on Monday.

Lopetegui's record with four wins, two draws and four losses left Real languishing ninth in the league standings, seven points behind leader Barca.

Lopetegui, 52, was sacked by Spain on the eve of this year's World Cup after learning that he had accepted the post at Bernabeu.

But he has had the worst start among Real coaches in the last 70 years. The club's president, Florentino Perez, is ready to brandish the ax after being completely outclbaded by Barca on Sunday.

The situation in Lopetegui attracted the sympathy of the media. On the front page of the sports daily Marca, we read in a first page: "It is not only the fault of Julen". The editor-in-chief of AS, Alfredo Relano, criticized the club for not replacing "the 50 goals of the season missed by Madrid in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo".

After a summer of courtesy with Mauricio Pochettino of Tottenham, the media reported that Perez had turned his attention to Conté, who was still employed by Chelsea when Lopetegui was appointed in June.

The Italian, who won the Premier League in his first season with Chelsea after winning three consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus, was sacked by the London club in July.

Reserve team coach Santiago Solari is expected to take over the team for mid-week Copa del Rey meeting with Melilla, while Conte will take charge of the event. La Liga match at home against Valladolid on Saturday, Spanish media reported.
