The Game of Thrones season 8 script displays excellent writing. That says a lot about the writing exposed when an episode of a very dense series of dialogs manages to hold viewers in a spell until it ends. The second episode of the last season of Game of Thrones was essentially an extension of the first episode.
The focus was once again on the interactions between characters and the coming war. This episode was about the human moments and we risk to miss it in the next episodes where it is about dead and undead.
The cliffhanger of the last episode – Jaime Lannister coming face to face with Bran Stark – was resolved almost immediately. As one could expect, Bran had no ill will towards Jaime. Daenerys Targaryen was not so kind, although the interventions of Tyrion Lannister and Brienne of Tarth, then the sentence of Sansa Stark, saved Jaime.
Jaime Lannister breathing a sigh of relief after being forgotten. Bran, who rarely speaks, has taken the trouble to pronounce the now iconic words, "What I do for love."
It is helpful to think about why Daenerys would always be furious with Jaime after all that was said to him his father was crazy.
Daenerys Targaryen also accused Tyrion Lannister of foolishness for trusting Cersei Lannister before Sansa Stark reminded her that she was doing the same. Sansa is by far the smartest person in the castle. Daenerys' attempt to bury the hatchet with Sansa fails when he is told outright that the North would never submit to a foreign leader. Sansa is not a person with whom we play with.
Theon Greyjoy arrives and swears to fight for Winterfell and the Starks. Sansa takes him in his arms.
Ser Davos Seaworth is responsible for feeding the soldiers. He notices a little girl with a half-healed face who wants to fight in the battle. Gilly arrives and tells him that she would feel much safer if she was there to protect her, as well as other women and children.
The Night Watch brothers as well as Tormund and Beric Dondarrion arrive and warn Jon Snow that the army of the dead is approaching. and will be in Winterfell before sunrise.
Tormund still loves Brienne de Tarth, by the way, and is shocked to be told that she is not a knight. "Tradition F ***," he says.
Tormund Giantsbane asks if the "great woman" (Brienne) is still there. Jaime Lannister tries to apologize to Bran Stark at Godswood before the three-eyed crow says that he's not Bran. He also suggests that it was necessary for Jaime to push him out the window, otherwise Kingslayer would not have become better and Bran would not be the Raven with three eyes.
Arya Stark is being made a weapon by her old friend Gendry. Arya also asks him about white walkers and their warriors since he fought them in the episode Beyond the Wall
Jaime Lannister talks with Brienne from Tarth and says that He would be happy if he fought under his orders. Brienne tells her that she is surprised not to have insulted her. Did she forget their conversation at King's Landing before going off to look for Stark girls?
When all the major protagonists are gathered in the "war room", Bran reveals that the king of the night wishes it and that his goal is to erase all humanity. . Since Bran, the three-eyed crow is his memory (the world), he is the main target of the king of the night. He says that they should use it as bait, because if the king of the night is killed, his army will be without a leader and without purpose. Attacking the dead is not an option because they are too numerous.
Missandei and Gray Worm talk about escaping Westeros after the war.
Arya Stark and Gendry meet. We have all seen this coming. Jaime Lannister animates Brienne de Tarth as a knight.
Ser Brienne of Tarth. Lyanna Mormont argues with Jorah about his participation in the battle. Sam arrives and gives his ancestral sword, Valyrian's steel blade, Heartsbane, to Jorah in gratitude to his father, the former commander of the Night Watch Jeor Mormont. Daenerys is unsurprisingly disturbed, but the sound of the horn announces the arrival of the Army of the Dead. This conflict will have to wait.
It was an intense episode, full of beautiful moments and intense dialogues.
