The second edition of N.T.Rama Rao biopic, a legendary actor turned politician, describes his political career, while the first focused on his personal life and successful acting career.
The hopes were strong in the second part, because the first had not managed to weave a lot of magic on the screen. Another advantage of the second part is that it is mainly about his political career, an attempt to highlight his "charisma" which helped him to be accepted as a "leader".
NTR was a mascot of "Telugu", a man who is considered an icon of Telugu pride and who was well played in the last part. In a few minutes, he covers the life of NTR from his childhood. The second part is a combination of his political background and his connections with his wife Basavatarakam, especially in his later years. Nobody could have played better than Vidya Balan, who started where she left.
Mahanayakudu focuses on NTR's intense political campaigns and the belief that connecting with people on the ground is extremely important. Balakrishna, once again, integrates well enough. He directs his energy in the right direction.
The focus is on Chandrababu Naidu, also NTR's son-in-law, about how he helped keep the Telugu Desam party intact. Naidu's role in withdrawing from the party during extremely difficult times was very well underscored. Rana Daggubati shines like a formidable mobilizer.
The film is largely based on the politics of the 1980s, about how NTR became the main minister of his differences with Indira Gandhi and how he believed. Another key figure in the film is Bhaskar Rao, a key figure who became an enemy in the NTR journey
. However, the length of Mahanayakudu could be a concern for some, because it loses its luster quickly in the second half. Still, a very watchable film.
