The year is 2563, 300 years after "The Fall". It is the day when "the United Republics of Mars" launch an attack and all the cities of the Earth located in the sky collapse – except one. So there is a suspended metal disc of a town called Zalem and below, Iron City, which houses all the survivors of the world who could not go to Zalem. Now, almost everyone downstairs wants to go up there. Why is Iron City so bad, and Zalem is so good, we're never really told.
So why not deduct some reasons for Iron City? While all the inhabitants of the planet live there now, the film only applies to one generic type: dressing, talking the same way and playing the same games. The occupants are either cyborgs (human faces, machine bodies, the two things combined in different proportions), people who mutilate cyborgs for body parts, hunter-hunters / bounty hunters (the film does not differentiate both categories) who pursue criminals. & # 39;, the masters of the game who design cyborgs to face a stadium on roller skates in a game designed as a gladiator sport and not caring about the injury, and a single man really, unequivocally (or is he?), Dr. Ido (Waltz). Who would want to live in this dark world?
And yet, for a moment, Alita: Battle Angel promises a real warmth in this metallic universe. Cast against type, Waltz is credible without being cheesy as a big-hearted scientist who has kept most of Iron City's beats. But a cyborg with which he establishes an instant link – the movie later reveals why – is a girl skeleton that he recovers from a junkyard. He gives her a body and a name, Alita, and almost as soon as Alita (Salazar) opens her eyes, Ido and she are inseparable. The talented Salazar, in her first leading role, is silk and steel, a sulky teenager and formidable warrior, disciple and leader.
As long as the film is centered on Ido and Alita, Battle Angel seems to tell the story of a cyborg trying. to find out who she was before she ended up in the case, she's so confused about the powers she seems to possess as thrilled by them, it works. But the film can not really decide what it should be, how much it should be, and how long it should go to reveal the follow-up.
Based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series, Gunnm, the film was in development for a long time with James Cameron, before finally giving way to Rodriguez. Cameron remains a co-writer and producer, and must be partly responsible for the confusing direction in which Battle Angel unfolds. One minute Alita is a teenager who rebels against the strange restrictions imposed by Ido. She then seeks to become a bounty hunter. Thirdly, she brings bounty hunters together against a dark-eyed criminal, and then decides to be part of the sport of death. In the center, she literally pulls her heart to offer to the human she falls in love with (a forgettable Johnson).
Connelly and Ali evolve in roles to an expression largely secondary to events. .
