What All Artists Did in common? Broken heart, adversity, a society that does not understand your art. No spoons of money. No privilege. Just the long hard and lonely walk. The main character of Zoya Akhtar, Murad, is the typical example of the oppressed who comes out of the slums of Dharavi and does not believe in Slumdog Millionaires. But he believes in telling his story through his music. His rap.
It is therefore a pity that Dharavi and the life in a house where more people than the walls are treated with the pink glbades of a stranger. Just like the foreign tourists of the Gully Boy who come to take a look inside the houses of Dharavi; a ticket of 500 rupees for a pbad in this "other world", selfie sticks in hand. Zoya Akhtar is very foreign to this world. Gully Boy is scratching the surface. What we see in the film is a look from the outside. Peekaboo, end credits.
Murad is a "slumdog". He measures his days waiting for Safina at the bus stop, humming for himself "apna time aayega". Far from college and his parents' quarrels, caught in his space on the mezzanine floor of his 300-square-foot house, he devotes his life to the pages of his notebook. The words are his. He needs the rhythm.
Enter MC Sher. Murad falls madly in love with this rapper from his college. He follows Sher's move on Facebook and goes into hiding. The rap battles take place here, in this world out of Fight Club. The weapon is rap. People insult themselves and get hit at their weakest point. Murad blends into the scene. His future is about to change. The spectator knows. The problem is the time it takes to reach this turning point.
Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy combines excerpts from Mumbai's slum and subsoil life. There are contrasts. United Colors of Benetton meets here the fake Adidas stripes. Shweta is Sky and Murad is Gully Boy. Through their alter ego, these musicians express daily problems and contrasting lives.
In Murad's life, we meet Safina. The childhood with which Murad is in a relationship since the age of 13 years. She wants to wear lipstick, go out with boys, party, leave the hijab at home, pursue a career in surgery. But then, we must face his reality: get married, run a house, hide at ten in the evening to see his boyfriend a great day.
Ranveer Singh casts his spell behind Murad. From kohl to his eyes to the pain in his words, Ranveer tells the story of a child living on the big screen. His focus is on the point. He pushes his claws into his character and emerges an unforgettable performance. Not his best performance, perhaps (Alauddin Khilji would still like to take this cake), but a second place close.
Alia Bhatt brings her effusive charm to the screen in Gully Boy. It does not have much to do in the movie and it's really a shame. The story of Safina is not fleshed out in Gully Boy. Of course, the movie is about Ranveer's character, but we deserved more than Alia. In her limited screentime, the girl Bhatt shows what she is made of. She beats girls who are trying to flirt with her boyfriend. It's a brave Muslim girl that neither the hijab nor the walls of her house can restrain. For every door that is slammed on her face, she finds a window to move forward. Metaphorically and otherwise.
The main actors are perfectly interpreted in their respective roles. From a Vijay Raaz as Murad's father to Sheeba Chaddha as Safina's mother, to Siddhant Chaturvedi as Sher, Zoya understands his characters well. But what it does not do is the movement of history.
Gully Boy suffers from a slow pace. The film takes its time to establish the story. And when that happens, there are not enough resources to bask in the glory of The movie ends on a steep note. He catapults his outsider on the big stage but does not let the spectator impregnate it. After investing 2 hours and 35 minutes in the film, you feel a bit deceived.
The main star of the film is his music. The many artists who are credited for the film's music do an elegant job with the soundtrack. If Ranveer Singh is Gully Boy's life, music is his soul. The words, the beatings all cry to the revolution. Azadi. Hindustan finds his hip hop in a Bollywood movie.
In short, he does not ride.
Apna time aayega. But today is not the day.
Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, is the big Bollywood outing today. According to our review, Ranveer and Alia present compelling performances, but the film directed by Zoya Akhtar provides only an outside glimpse of life in the slums of Mumbai.
