Sumptuous decors, a visual luxuriance, intense emotions, a bright Madhuri Dixit who always emotes and pirouettes in the manner of a dream and a superb to its top Alia Bhatt manufactures Kalank an almost flawless cinematic experience. On the surface anyway. The design of the production and the cinematography are of first order. Screenwriter-director Abhishek Varman orchestrates the resources at his disposal – they are probably huge – with talent and sense of proportion. This enticing story of forbidden love and its repercussions, which take place in the tumultuous past of the subcontinent, is fraught with tremendous flickering along the way, without ever ceasing to fascinate. The immensity of Kalank's web and the excess of his dramatic flourishes undermine politics and psychology that advance the narrative You desperately want to get closer to the characters on the screen, feel their pulse, hear them breathe, feel their sighs, but the overwhelming surface glare is an obstacle that prevents any direct connection from being created between an attentive audience and the dramatic characters seen in the filthy glow of an unhappy dawn.

They come and go, beautiful and sonorous, haunting, even when they are on the ground. They rarely go out of their bright coats to become tangible individuals capable of communicating the raw feelings that the period – the tumultuous years leading to the sharing of the subcontinent – should evoke.
Kalank multi-starred, but for a production of 80 crores of rupees, he does not have the kind of audience that can ensure an exceptional opening. So, what the film does and does well is to rely on the power of the image to hold our attention. Almost three hours, it seems a touch sometimes stretched. However, actors including Varun Dhawan in the most meaty role of his career, throw everything they can into the mix, giving intrigue power and pathos.
