Ram Peranbu is not intended for those who are perhaps hardcore fans of Mammootty, those who are used to seeing him as a superstar, larger than life. Ram turns Mammootty into a taxi driver, Amudhavan, who returns from Dubai after a decade, discovering that his wife had escaped with another man, leaving behind a teenage spastic girl, Papa (Sadhana). The girl shivers at the sight of her father, but later gets used to him and the idyllic setting he has in Kodaikbad. There, in a wooden bungalow, Dad lives with a horse and birds, but his mother is deeply absent.
Ram builds in his scenario – divided into several chapters, named after the many soul states of Nature – a variety of incidents that only summarize the difficulties of Amudhavan while He is trying to cope with the mood swings of a growing girl, her menstrual dilemmas and even her problems. badual urges.
There is a scene where the father, literally pushed to the wall, goes in search of a gigolo. Amudhavan faces such worries as he tries to make ends meet, phoning Chennai, where the father and daughter are found after being swindled from the Kodaikbad bungalow by land sharks. This is the least convincing segment of the film, where the plot lags us beyond the suspension of disbelief. It is really hard to find a man in old age and after being defeated (or deceived) by his wife, falling gently on his spell under the spell of another woman, Vijayalakshmi (Anjali in a small but important role ).
That said, we have to give it to Ram for his extremely sensitive description of the father-daughter relationship (we saw it earlier in Thanga Meengal). And happily, Sadhana, suffering from paralysis, is not reduced to a caricature. In fact, she is just brilliant as a lost girl who aspires to have a mother. When Vijayalakshmi enters Kodaikbad, the teen begins to shine, baduming her family is now complete. The film captures in all its nuanced essence the turmoil and anguish that crosses the girl. Amudhavan too, whose helpless inability to care for his daughter is being explored with a kind of feeling that we do not often see in Indian cinema.
However, Peranbu could have been much more powerful if it had been shorter and longer. tighter. The story tends to weigh on you after the end of the first half. But I would still go with four out of five stars for a job that will stay with you a long time.
