Review of the movie Pokemon Detective Pikachu: Ryan Reynolds, Judge Smith's movie is worth the detour

The narrative of this film begins with Tim Goodman (Judge Smith), an insurance executive who once wanted to be a Pokemon trainer and who does not appreciate having a Pokemon partner.
After a mysterious accident in which he lost his father, Tim landed at Ryme, a futuristic metropolis, where Pokémon and human beings live together in harmony. Tim is here to pick up his father's belongings and the film is mostly filmed in the place where his father used to live.

In his father's apartment, Tim meets Pikachu, his father's partner, in the book Pokemon (voiced by Ryan Reynolds). rabbit-fur-rodent yellow and black as Pokemon. There, he also falls on a mysterious jar containing purple liquid.

With the help of Pikachu and Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton), an ambitious trainee on cable TV news, she investigates the death of her father and learns the genetically modified Mewtwo, whose mystical powers threaten all the inhabitants of the city of Ryme. The way he solves the mystery is the heart of the story.

As for performance, Smith is sincere as Tim, tasteless and uninspired. Newton, accompanied by his partner Pokemon Psyduck, is charming as the brave reporter Lucy. However, she brings a discordant enthusiasm that looks like a cartoon, which makes her look totally misplaced.

While Bill Nighy excels in a wheelchair, wacko billionaire entrepreneur and visionary creator Ryme City, Ken Watanabe is as shallow as the lieutenant. Hide Yoshida, the police officer with stone face, little narrative.

Ryan Reynolds is the highlight of the cast: he gives a lively voice to the lively, cute and adorable Pikachu.

Visually, with his neon. Detective Pokemon Pikachu seems to be heavily inspired by earlier comedies animated by real action scenes. However, animations and CG images placed in the live action frame lack textural finesse.

Overall, director Rob Letterman's film is not an unpleasant experience. But with an absurdly ridiculous plot, chaotic and devoid of punchy Pokémon moments, the film is definitely disappointing, even for loyal fans of the franchise.

However, if you only want to see Pokemon characters make themselves known With CGI, this film is worth the price of the ticket.
