The filmmaker talks to TNM about the writing of "Majili", about how love stories work on screen, about making Chai-Sam, and so on.
Shiva Nirvana Majili starring the real-life couple Samantha and Naga Chaitanya, is about to be filmed on April 5th. After delivering the hit Sminn Ninnu Kori in 2017, Shiva is back with another romantic and emotional drama after a year and a half.
If, thanks to Ninnu Kori Shiva gave an unrealistic love triangle a reality with its story, drama and humor inspired by the characters. Majili is a simple tale of love torn by conflict, he says. The director is waiting for the release of the film, after completing the script of two other films.
Chai-Sam is installed in a decor devoid of charm, shot in a colony in Vizag Majili . After spending a decade in the industry, Shiva admits that he is still skeptical of being in front of the camera even for interviews, but in a frank conversation with TNM he is talking about writing Majili the way love stories work on the screen, directing Chai-Sam and more.
It is said that you took less than two weeks to complete the scenario of Majili . So what took you so long to start your second film after the success of Ninnu Kori ?
After Ninnu Kori I did not want to do another romantic drama had finished the screenplays of two films, two thrillers of action, before writing Majili . But dates and combinations of actors did not work and I did not have the big date of a hero. And I decided to wait.
But it was at that time that Chaitanya called me and asked me to write a script for him. I was confused because I had nothing for Chaitanya at the time. But after a week, Majili struck and I was delighted to share the story with Chaitanya. I've finished part of it in three days and told it to the actor. He was convinced and I finished the scenario in the days that followed.
I usually only decide on the casting of my film after finishing writing the screenplay. But this time, Chaitanya and Samantha seemed perfect for the Majili plot and I decided to accompany them.
The trailer of Majili has little similarities to the plot of Ninnu Kori . Both speak of heart failure, a hero reminiscing about her lost love and a strong female character trying to bring the hero back to her feet. Do the similarities stop there or are there more?
I think the similarities stop there and that the plot of Majili is much richer. Ninnu Kori is a very light and urban-centered love story. In real life, a man staying in the same house as his former girlfriend and husband is an impossible scenario. But the treatment of the scenario gave the impression that it was real on the screen.
But on the other hand, Majili presents a more realistic scenario and his writing is simple. Chaitanya will appear in two meetings, one in her twenties and another in her mid-thirties. It is based on a story taking place in a small settlement of Gnanapuram in Vizag. Chaitanya and Samantha form a young couple and the story develops from the conflict that pits them against each other. The story is as simple as watching the life of a couple without their knowledge
Every Friday, many love stories are on the screen. But Majili is unique in that it is located in a middle-clbad residential colony, it does not over-glamorize its protagonists and, what is most important, it is a story of love after marriage.
You in previous interviews wanted your first film to have Nani in mind. The idea worked well and you now have two other big names in the industry, Chaitanya and Samantha. How did he lead the actors?
Chaitanya is an actor who always respects the director's decisions. When I was writing the character of Poorna (played by Chaitanya), I needed someone who could minimize the emotions. A character who does not deliver noisy dialogues does not express his feelings too much. I needed someone who could express emotions through gestures. And Chaitanya, with his body language, was prefect under the name of Poorna.
For the role of Sravani, we needed a powerful performer. Someone who could organize an evening out with the middle clbad. And I believe that in theaters, Samantha as Sravani would immediately be in touch with the audience. The characters are well balanced and I would say that Samantha has an importance equal to that of Sravani compared to Poorna in the film.
What are the elements of your scenario that you think find a public agreement?
If you want to make a romantic film, you must not turn away from the love story between the two characters in the story. If you look at one of the great love stories from around the world, all the conflicts and characters in the movie would revolve around both hearts. If you put a stunt, three to four songs and several comedy pieces in between, the script will not work. In order for any love story to succeed, the writing must be simple and straightforward. You can minimize emotions while making an intense movie.
You have two movies. Your two films address the young audience. In your opinion, to what extent can a director take advantage of this creative freedom and to what extent is his audience ready to adapt to change?
The freedom of creation always depends on the clarity of the director's thoughts. If you are very confident in your scenario, I think you can convince any producer of characters and storylines in your story. When you have clarity, others also tend to respect your decisions and choices.
But when you lose the same trust, especially beginners, people get mixed up and interfere in your work. It all depends on the clarity and conviction of the filmmaker, because no producer would invest millions of dollars in a film director, even if the plot is revolutionary, even if he is not convinced of the film. Viewers are willing to adapt to new genres as long as the script is compelling and superstardom is minimized in the movies.
Why the name of "Majili"? Is there a story behind this?
I especially want to name my films, especially the love stories. I would not want my film to be called Nee Prema Naa Thalli . It seems very ordinary. I always respect the sound of the title. I like the titles of three or four letters. Even if you name Ninnu Korri (you want it), there is no complete stop after the two words. Titles must be abstract and intriguing sound.
Majili means "a stop in the journey". The idea behind the title is that maybe up to 27-28 years of our life, we are in a hurry to accomplish things, until we find that person and go in. in the institution called marriage. It is this stop that adds more meaning to our lives. And Majili also begins from this stop of the life of two people.
