If you've been a fan of the Avengers since the beginning, you've probably gotten used to your lot of bad guys – those who seek to turn society into their crazy way and turn the world into a disastrous place. Although several notable villains have been scattered in the MCU, including Thanos, Loki, Hela, The Winter Soldier (early) and many others, only one can rule.
Rotten Tomatoes invited Avengers fans – while they were anxiously anticipating the latest episode of the saga of a decade – to take part in a giant investigation. One of the many questions in the survey was asking fans to reveal their favorite villains from Marvel. It is important to note that fans have been allowed to vote for multiple characters.
So, who is the nasty favorite? Who do fans of the Avengers put in front of all the other villains of the MCU?
Loki won the nasty favorite (by far)
According to Rotom Tomatoes, Loki received the highest number of votes for the favorite villain Marvel, with 63% of the vote. Thanos came in second with 48% and Hela in third with 30%.
Contrasting with the critical opinion that places Helmut Zemo as the best villain of the Avengers, fans opt for the character portrayed by Tom Hiddleston. Helmut Zemo was responsible for the fallout from the events of the Civil War, and, while he was placing a stake between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, this villain was at the bottom of the fan list, with only 4% of fans. designating him as their favorite.
Erik Killmonger – the only human villain on the list – was fourth at 29%, behind the character described by Cate Blanchett. The question is therefore why the difference between critics and fans is believed. Why is Loki considered the best villain of all time? Given the narrative arc of the character, is he even a full-fledged villain? Maybe this facet has played in the decisions of the fans.
Possible reasons why fans chose Loki as a nasty favorite of Marvel
Loki has appeared in several MCU films and, even though he often plays the nasty deceiver, the relationship between him and Thor remains complex and is never two-dimensional or bbad. Given his ugly but unpredictable ways, fans may have felt that he possessed the most complete character profile.
Loki, similar to Tony Stark – but often works for the bad guys – also offers a sarcastic prowess impossible to deny and quick wit. He is intelligent and manipulative, pleasant qualities on the screen (whether naughty or heroic).
In the mind of a cold, calculating sociopath in the beginning, viewers have the chance to see Loki endure a transformative journey (to some extent) throughout his time with the MCU.
A wicked person who is constantly bad (without a founded cause) or always meets your expectations is getting older; Loki was the exact opposite of this trope. His bitterness had deep roots and his choices were poisoned by a childhood of unequal treatment.
While on the surface, Loki seemed to feed only scorn for his father and his brother, many think, and the movies support him, that love did exist somewhere well below the pitiless disposition that he was putting forward. Loki, in short, is arguably the most complex villain; thus, he is by nature an obvious favorite of the fans.
Since Loki appears in most MCU movies compared to other villains, fans also had more time to form an opinion of his character.
