According to the National Council for the Promotion of the Urdu Language (NCPUL), an autonomous body of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, superstars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif could be convened to approve this language.
The NCPUL was faced with the competition of private actors who organize events for the promotion of Urdu and attract a huge crowd of young people.
Aquil Ahmed, director of the NCPUL, said that he would contact Bollywood actors, known personalities like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, and make them say a few lines in Urdu, and then use those videos when their events.
The government agency reportedly received from the Modi government a budget of 332.76 crores of rupees for 2014-2019, nearly double that it had received during the previous UPA-II government, where he had received 176.48 crore.
The NCPUL publishes books in Urdu, organizes conferences at the national and international levels and organizes courses leading to a degree in Arabic and Urdu to promote the language.
Social media is not really sold on the idea of Salman and Katrina to promote the language. One of Twitter's users wrote: "ha ha ha ha the day's humor: salman khan & katrina kaif !!!!", while another wrote: "before asking krina to promote in Urdu, make sure she speaks well Hindi ".
A few others alleged that Salman and Katrina could not write / speak Urdu correctly and therefore questioned the move.
