Shazam ignores Captain Marvel but makes a Captain America joke

[ad_1]

Warning: SPOILERS for Shazam!

The DC Movie Shazam! from DC is a cosmic coincidence that will arrive just weeks after the filming of Captain Marvel. But as proof that the rivalry between the heroes of the same name is far from over, Shazam! totally ignores the existence of Carol Danvers … to make a joke of Captain America instead.

No one can blame his authors for choosing his Shazam! because Captain America remains the display of the universe of the film Marvel Avengers . Yet Marvel and DC are unlikely to wink at each other – and the two superheroes who have become famous under the name "Captain Marvel" are an unparalleled opportunity. The best fans that can be hoped for are the possible names of Shazam to Carol Danvers, before Billy Batson's alter ego superhero was officially named in honor of Steve Rogers.

The film is filled with Shazam! and Captain Marvel Easter Eggs, many of whom play on the confusion surrounding the character's name. Billy neither receives nor self-badigns a superhero name in the film, which leaves his adoptive brother (and his superhero sidekick), Freddy Freeman, to several versions. When Freddy downloads a video after another of Billy's training on superheroes and his day, the audience can see how the titles of his YouTube videos are so varied. Referring to the magical form of Billy as "Red Cyclone" and "Thundercrack", are credible placeholders … but a nickname stands out: "ZAP-tain America".

Boys discover the true nature of Shazam's superpowers, connecting him directly to the "living lightning" that strikes him to convey his magic to him. But the play of words "ZAP-tain America" only makes sense if "Captain America" is a name of superhero known in the world whole. Which raises a question with, in our opinion, two possible solutions. The world of Justice League in which Shazam! unofficially occurs includes Marvel's heroes who are fighting against Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Captain America, the Avengers and the rest of the MCU are simply their real comic books read by superhero enthusiasts.

Since there will surely be MCU followers who will say that the move is a small thing on DC's part, it is an argument to make that it was Captain Marvel who has first forwarded the opportunity to pay tribute to Carol's predecessor. After all, Billy Batson first appeared as "Captain Marvel" in Whiz Comics # 2 released in 1939 less than two years after Superman launched the superhero genre. The version of Marvel's hero – the original, Mar-Vell – only appeared in 1967 and Carol Danvers a number later.

It would still be nice if Freddy refers to Billy as "Zap -tain Marvel" to wink at the fans. But even if star Zachary Levi supports Captain Marvel it is not difficult to understand why Warner Bros. would choose not to do free advertising for the competition. Fans will simply have to be satisfied with the comics, where it has been suggested that Captain Marvel and Shazam are the same hero, but are in two parallel universes.
