Zoya Akhtar's latest film, Gully Boy, is a hit with critics and audiences alike. Alia Bhatt again impressed everyone with her natural talent and the star of the movie, Ranveer Singh, proved that he was one of the best in Bollywood at the moment. However, what surprised everyone was the brilliant performance of Siddhant Chaturvedi – MC Sher of Gully Boy, who debuted at Bollywood with the film.
Siddhant is a cool rapper with the biggest soul of the movie. He is a mentor, a friend and a brother to an aspiring artist whose selflessness and good heart have won the hearts of many. In this interview, Siddhant talks about working with Ranveer, praise for him, and MC Shers in his own life.
Everyone amazes Gully Boy and your performance in the film.
Deepika (Padukone) said, "Oh! It's just a boy. He is so cute. People were waiting for someone a huge one. You know, like someone around 28 years old. When people saw me in reality, they were quite surprised. They were like, "Oh, he's only 25! He is so cute. So I think it was a compliment. When people are surprised by your image on the screen and they see you off the screen, that is a compliment. In addition, they thought I'm a real rapper.

Several critics and even those who saw the film felt that you have eclipsed Ranveer in many scenes. Have you felt this and has this ever been the intention?
No, no. How is this intention? How can one hide (Ranveer)? We come from the school of thought that we do not think like that. We are just playing our roles. And no, I was just his mentor and that's how I see him. In the end, the movie is about him, the Gully Boy. Ranveer Singh in and like Gully Boy likes in and like Simmba. It's he who played a huge role, it's him who brought the audience into the theaters. So, I do not think anyone can (the shadow on him). I was in tears watching him at the theater. So it's nothing like that. Puraane zamaane ki baatein hai sab (Such thoughts are now obsolete).
But does that sound like a compliment?
No, no. I am very happy that my role was appreciated because I joined MC Sher. They really liked the character and that's what I remember from him.
On your social media, you are writing poems and, in a recent interview, you stated that you were bullied as a child. Do you think your life story was similar to Murad?
I felt like apna time kab aaega. So I usually write, but they were usually haiku and maybe four lines, nothing in the long format. These were only thoughts. So yes, I could tell (to Murad). But in real life, I can not talk about MC Sher anymore. But that's what we are, we are actors and we do things.
Have you had a MC Sher in your life?
I do not have an MC Sher, I have a lot of MC Shers in my life. My father is my MC Sher, there is Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, and Zoya Akhtar was my sherry. And last but not least, Ranveer Singh. Every time the scene stopped, I asked him, "Baba, how did it go? He told me 'Bhot hard. Bhot sai karra hai you '. So he gave me that confidence; I am a big fan of his work.
(Spoiler) There was a big scene in the film when during the semifinals of the rap battle, Sher realizes that he lost and that Murad won. He turns around with a big smile and only feels happiness for his friend. How was he filming this scene? Was selfless emotion something that you could easily feel?
It was very spontaneous. I've been in one take; Zoya never discussed this scene and she just told me very briefly what it was all about. She just let me do my thing, however, I felt like. And that scene was shot at the end of the shoot and at that point it was Murad and me, Sher. And I also have a 13 year old brother for whom I am Sher. And MC Sher as a veteran has won so many battles. He is happy for him (Murad), this is his first battle. I am only recounting his feelings.
Have you ever thought about what MC Sher would do now? After the end of the film?
I do not know … they have to do shows together, Gully Boy and MC Sher. They will create a great album, they will collaborate with international artists. You know that their styles are also very different – MC Sher is very street and Ranveer's lyrics are very inspiring.
In your opinion, what other scene was very important in Sher's story?
I do not break scenes like that, but I think one of the most important scenes was Sher When Murad sees it too, it gives him a brief idea of his past, his family and its origin.
Karan Johar recently praised the film and your performance on an Instagram post. You mentioned that your family shared screen shots on WhatsApp. What was your family's reaction to the film?
They were very moved. You know that I come from a very normal family. I grew up watching Zoya Akhtar and Karan Johar. So for him, posting on me is a big deal. I am a big fan of his direction and his production. So yes, it was a big problem for my family.
