NEW DELHI: Sunil Arora is said to have been named the next commissioner of elections, senior sources at the Ministry of Law said Monday.

His name was erased by the Center and sent to Rashtrapati Bhawan, the sources said.

"Yes, his name has been erased, he is the next CEC, a notification will follow," said a senior official.

He will take up his duties on December 2nd.

The Election Commission will hold the 2019 general elections.

In addition to the Lok Sabha polls, Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Maharashtra and Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim should be held next year.

An electoral commission of the Electoral Commission may be appointed for a term of six years or up to 65 years, whichever comes first.

A former bureaucrat, Arora was appointed election commissioner on August 31, 2017.

He succeeds Om Prakash Rawat, who retired on Saturday.

In Rajasthan, besides badignments in the district of Dholpur, Alwar, Nagaur and Jodhpur, he was secretary to the chief minister from 1993-1998 and principal secretary of the CM (2005-2008), in addition to the service of the information and public relations management (IPR), industries and investments.
