SPIDER-MAN: Away from home – Mysterio and the limits of illusion

With Quentin Beck of Jake Gyllenhaal, Marvel reveals his own faults. So what will they do about them?

with ] Spider-Man: Far from Home We got our first cinematic rendition on one of Spider-Man's oldest characters, Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio. His portrayal is quite clever (without the aid of Jake Gyllenhaal's brilliant performance), as the film adapts the clbadic repertoire of character illusions by making his entire character up to the third act.

In [19659007] Far From Home Mysterio is presented as a superhero from the largest multiverse. Beck fights to save our world (nicknamed Earth-616 as a nod to the comics) of Elementals, titanic giants who destroyed his home world. Beck hovers over scenes of action zapping lasers at the enemy, recalling the other heroes Peter met, but most notably Tony Stark, whose absence is most felt in this later universe [19659007] Marvel Cinematic. Of course, this movie is dedicated to Mysterio, everything from elementals to multiverse to Beck's oversized super costume shop, is part of the illusion to get unlimited access to Tony Stark's technical division as well. 39 to all the wealth and fame that this implies. 19659009] When the film reveals that Beck's heroism is a neat simulacrum, it also reveals a surprising amount of self-awareness on the part of Marvel. The Beck of Gyllenhaal can not help but specify: The MCU has become so numb by the crises that shake the planet that it is enough to come at the right time in a colorful suit to win the trust and adoration of the mbades. He even addresses Tony Stark himself, the messiah of the gold-titanium MCU, to make it clear that even a selfish child-man can be venerated to near-holiness if he puts on a suit and casts lasers on a monster big enough. (He is not mistaken.)

The Beck Reveals and Several Other Moments of the Movie Give the Impression That Marvel Uses Spider-Man: Far From Home – Their First Movie After the Highlight gigantic of [19659007] Avengers: Endgame – to finally recognize some of their most tired stories. The constant invasion of bewildering and impersonal invasions. ("People will believe anything!" Observes Beck.) Heroes gain immense access to power without reserve or supervision. So with all the self-awareness expounded in Far From Home [19659008] one could suppose that the film tries a deconstruction. In itself, it would not be a bad approach, because in the process, Far From Home could then reconstruct a new identity for both films Spider-Man (after Into The Spider-Verse throws glove) and the post-Iron Man, post- Saga of the Infinite MCU.

But, frustrating, Spider-Man: Far From Home [19659008] is not he interested in a new way forward? The film only interests clichés, which gives it the illusion of doing something different without really doing something different. This is the true great illusion of Far From Home and it's not even a Quentin Beck creation.

After the revelation of Mysterio – where Beck opposes the subtle injustices of a world so preoccupied with the super saviors – the film fails to examine Beck's points significantly. In the end, Peter Parker gets everything he wants – including the title "Next Tony Stark" – not by sacrifice or personal growth, but because he is simply a good boy with super powers. This validates Mysterio's style-based shortcuts, because these are the same ways that Peter succeeds in the film. (And should I really explain how perverse Spider-Man, a character traditionally informed by Uncle Ben's absolute trust, is now selling to us as one of Tony Stark's true successors?) [19659010] people being gullible enough to see faceless CG creations and believe them to be real threats reads as very cynical when you consider the film's climax; he opposes the heroes to an army of creations of CG without face that we, the spectators, think to have to threaten. And for all the excitement JK After the appearance of Simmons in the medium credits scene, I can not expect them to do anything with this revelation after the discovery of Far From Home almost ignored Homecoming . In what world would May Parker be a "cool mother" about her nephew become Avenger after 1) two well known Avengers were killed in action and 2) she and her nephew disappeared from existence during the last five years?

As an apologist for Thor: The Dark World I hope to understand that I do not write to be hard because of the harshness. I write because I fear that after the unprecedented success of Black Panther and all the excitement of the Infinity Saga the MCU may have- to be found in a rut. After all, how often can you tell a story about finding your inner hero before you weary? How many times can you increase the stakes that threaten the world before things start to become less interesting instead of more? A success of 23 films like this one is unprecedented and, even though I hate the term "superhero fatigue", it's always something that Marvel Studios must consciously face, not to retain its listeners, but to keep its creators invested. I think this kind of creative fatigue is the reason why Spider-Man: Far From Home is a film so strangely shy and unambitious.

The way Marvel Comics has become accustomed to fighting creative fatigue is to see their superhero stories as more than just superhero stories. They are committed to merging the genre with horror, comedy, satire, avant-garde, and so on. That's how you get The Last Kraven Hunt or a Hawkeye Issue entirely from the point of view of a dog's nose. Although Marvel Studios has sometimes experimented with other genres and structures, it is undeniable that their main model is still the first film Iron Man . Why else Spider-Man: Far From Home would he be so concerned about the reenactment of the story of this film, until the nasty third act reveals, the AC / DC needle drop and the last minute unmasking? I suppose Marvel himself recognizes that this is a problem. Yet even after eliminating (or buying Disney) all the competition, they are still afraid to break with the formula Iron Man . Captain Marvel possessed the characteristics of a single Marvel film from a structural and thematic point of view, but he lost himself in his superficial speech like that of Tony Stark, such as the need to style all movies seen with a line or a wink camera.

Quentin Beck said, "People will believe in anything!", But "nothing" should not be limited to the sci-fi flavor you use to smear your faceless threat into computer-generated images. Why do not you let something really say something?
