Tanzanian tycoon kidnapped Mohammed Dewji released

Tanzanian magnate Mohammed Dewji, who was abducted earlier this month, said Saturday that he was released and returned home safely.

"I thank Allah for coming home safely, and I thank all my Tanzanian compatriots and everyone in the world for their prayers," he said in a tweeted message.

"I thank the Tanzanian authorities, including the police, for working for my safe return."

His father, Gullam Dewji, confirmed the release of his son's comments in the Tanzanian daily Mwanachi. His uncle, Azim Dewji, said the kidnappers released him on Saturday morning in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's economic capital.

Dewji was born in Tanzania and studied at Georgetown University in the United States. He was also a Member of Parliament from 2005 to 2015.

In 2013, he became the first Tanzanian to make the cover of Forbes magazine and was named Africa's year-round personality in the Forbes magazine.

Dewji is also the principal shareholder of the Tanzanian football club, Simba FC.

According to Forbes, it ranks 17th among billionaires in Africa, worth $ 1.5 billion (1.29 billion euros).

Dewji is married with three children. According to Forbes, he promised to donate at least half of his fortune to philanthropic causes in 2016.
