The Academy of Visual and Cinematographic Arts canceled its decision to award four awards at the February 24 Oscars television break. In a statement released Friday, the Academy said it had "heard comments from its members" and will present the 24 awards as part of the telecast, without changes. The brief statement, published on the Academy's website, reads:
The Academy heard the reactions of its members regarding the awarding of four Academy Awards: cinematography, editing, live footage, makeup and hairstyle. All Oscars will be presented without modifications, in our traditional format. We are looking forward to Oscars Sunday, February 24th.
– Leaders of the Board of Governors of the Academy
As part of a series of measures to reduce to three hours the television broadcast of the Oscars, the Academy had revealed Monday plans to present four awards – for cinematography, editing, makeup and hairstyle, and short films in action – during the commercial breaks of the 91st Academy Awards. The winners' speeches will be broadcast later on the show, says a letter from Academy President John Bailey to members.
However, the decision was perceived as an affront to these categories and there was an immediate reaction on the part of Hollywood. The members of the film industry on social media have criticized the exclusion of rewards from the cinematography and editing of the television broadcast, claiming that they were an integral part of the art of the cinematic realization. An open letter signed by more than 200 directors of photography, filmmakers and actors, including Bradley Cooper, Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Roger Deakins, Quentin Tarantino, Damien Chazelle and Seth Rogen, urged the Academy to reconsider its decision, affirming that the plan was "an insult to those of us who have dedicated their lives and pbadions to the profession of their choice".
The Academy then clarified its plan in a letter to its members, stating that "no category of awards at the 91st Academy Awards will be presented in order to portray the achievements of its candidates and winners as being the best of others. "
However, the storm refused to abate and several big names signed the open letter, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Peter Dinklage, Christopher Nolan, Alejandro G. Inarritu and Guillermo del Toro. Associations of cinematographers and editing directors, including the Cinematographers Guild, the International Guild of Directors of Photography, the American Society of Cinematographers and American film publishers, also expressed their disapproval of l & # 39; Academy.
After the Academy announced that it was canceling its decision, several of these badociations issued statements of appreciation of the body of the Oscars, Deadline .
This is the last attempt to reshuffle the ceremony to which the Academy had to return. Last year, the Oscars had announced the creation of a new category in the category "Best Popular Film", but had to postpone its implementation after being widely criticized. Last month, the Academy planned to include in the ceremony only two of the five songs nominated for the best original song, but this was also dropped.
The ceremony also has no host this year, actor and comedian Kevin Hart, who was to anchor the event, resigned after old homophobic tweets from his resurface on social media.
