Black Panther has already won three Oscars tonight. Although these victories represent the very first time that Marvel Studios is recognized by the Academy, they have a much deeper and more meaningful meaning for black women in Hollywood. As Kyle Buchanan on Twitter noted, only three black women have ever won Oscars in non-acting categories – and two of those victories occurred during the ceremony tonight.
Ruth E. Carter became the first black woman to win an Oscar in the Best Costume category, and a few moments later, Hannah Beachler became the first black woman to win the Oscar for Best Achievement. shared with Jay Hart.
"I got it … Wow, it's been a long time coming," said Carter as she took the stage to accept her price and that she was not lying. Carter won his first Oscar nomination in 1993 for Malcolm by Spike Lee and entered history at that time as the first black person to be nominated in the category. Black Panther marks his third Oscar nomination. "Spike Lee, thank you for my start," Carter told the director, who is nominated this year for BlacKkKlansman . "I hope this makes you proud."
It then pays homage to the significance of the depiction of Black Panther of T & # 39; Challa and his kingdom of Wakanda. "Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king," Carter continued. "It was the honor of my life to create costumes."
In his moving speech, Beachler pays tribute to the director of Black Panther Ryan Coogler – who has not received a nomination for best director – and director of photography Rachel Morrison. "I give strength to all who come next, to continue, never to give up," said Beachler. "And when you think it's impossible, just remember this advice that I received from a very wise woman: I did my best, and this one is quite good. "
