Hima Das became the first Indian athlete to win an international gold medal for the country. The 18-year-old Athlete from Assam won the gold medal in the 400-meter final in Finland at the Tampere U20 World Championships. Yet a curious section of social media was busy wondering something else – What is the caste of Hima Das?
The Google search on Hima Das, especially his caste, saw a peak after winning gold. This is not the first time that a champion is seen from the prism of caste. Earlier, when PV badminton champion Sindhu won silver at the Rio Olympics, Google's research on its caste has increased, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and the Telangana region. And now, Google Trends has shown that caste was the most "related subject" by Das, with the highest research of Assam, followed by Arunachal Pradesh, at the time of writing. In addition, just type Hima to get the immediate search result as "Hima Das caste".
