They are as different as chalk and cheese, but they are also deeply connected. As for the generic medieval female fantasy characters, Sansa and Arya are much more complex and layered, and are essential to the more general scenario of the story. In this interview with the Rolling Stones, Song of Ice and Fire writer George RR Martin talks about the long quest of the perfect Stark sisters and how they finally ended up with Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams.
Martin says that they were very clear from the start, what they do not want not it's just two or three pretty faces. In his words,
"These are not things that make girls look cute and offer clever little mannequins to suppress their silly father, as you do in a sitcom. These are girls who are going to experience truly enormous personal traumas. They will see death and war. They will see their decapitated relatives.

[19659007] Martin reveals that the main obstacle to this quest was the casting of Arya. According to Martin this was "particularly difficult, as I feared a little; I think we looked at more potential Aryas than any other role in this show. " It may be because Arya is very different from what women were supposed to be in the Middle Ages (from where ASOIF draws inspirations).
Martin says he's based Arya on many women he's known in his youth – the '60s and' 70s – and that the character has echoes of the feminist movement. There have been hundreds of auditions, but this mix of purity and innocence was untraceable, until they saw little Maisie. Martin remembers,
"I saw Maisie's tape, and it was like," Here it is. She's there. Arya. She says the lines, she's alive, she's Arya's spirit, you see? It was incredible. David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] and I said, "Yes, we found it, hooray. Sends escalations. "
Sansa's cast was relatively easy, but they were no less happy with Sophie Turner because of it. What Martin particularly liked was the speed with which Sophie and Maisie got together. They immediately exchanged themselves, even at the hearing.
Maisie was in fact so impressed with Sophie that she apparently told her mother, "I do not know if I will get it or not, but I hope that the other girl that I met here gets it because" she is awesome."
Sansa and Arya faced each other at the beginning, but seven seasons and eight years later, they finally learned to work together and to bond as a family. The bond that Sophie and Maisie had formed during their first meeting never ceased to strengthen. For example, Maisie will be Sophie's maid of honor when she knots the knot this year. Martin sounds like a proud grandfather when he says,
"These young women grew up together. I think they have become sisters in more than the script. And the friendship they have forged will last. "
