Jared Leto, who played the Joker in Suicide squad, is looking to add another cartoon character to his resume.
The Oscar winner signed to play in Morbius, Sony's latest entry in its Marvel base, Spider Manuniverse -centric characters.
Daniel Espinosa, the Scandinavian filmmaker who led Secure house and the sci-fi thriller of last year Life, will direct the feature, which has a script from Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the duo that created Netflix Lost in space remake.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce with Lucas Foster.
The project is based on the Morbius antihero the living Vampire. Morbius is Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who has suffered from a rare blood disorder and has tried to heal himself to disastrous results. Instead of being healed, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism – thirst for blood, with fangs and a super strength – and fought Spider-Man. Over time, however, he became a somewhat heroic character and even titled his own comic book titles.
Morbius was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane and appeared in 1971 Amazing Spider-Man No. 101, the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.
Sony director Palak Patel will oversee the studio.
While Leto chose in the past projects that had independent sensibilities, he won an Oscar for his work in Dallas Buyers ClubIn recent years, he has targeted roles in tentpole or franchise projects. In addition to playing the popular DC villain in 2016 Suicide squad, the actor played a sinister character in Blade Runner 2049 and is attached to a sequel to Tron.
