Actress Katherine Helmond, Emmy-nominated actress and Golden Globe winner, played two very different matriarchs on ABC sitcoms "Who's the Boss?" and "Soap", is dead, announced his agency Friday. She was 89 years old.

"Katherine Helmond was a remarkable human being, and an extraordinary artist, generous, kind, charming and deeply funny," Light said in a statement. "She taught me a lot about life and inspired me indelibly while watching her work, Katherine was a gift for our company and the world."
An only child, raised by his mother and grandmother, who started playing in a little girl at the Catholic school, Helmond began his professional career in the theater and often went back to it. . She was named Tony Award in 1973 for her Broadway role in Eugene O'Neill's "The Great God Brown".
She was one of the favorites of director Terry Gilliam, who put her in his films "Brazil", "Time Bandits" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
Her major break came with "Soap", a parody of soap operas aired from 1977 to 1981. She played the rich matriarch Jessica Tate, one of the two main characters in the series, alongside Robert Guillaume, and a breakthrough for Billy Crystal, who played her nephew.
She was nominated at the Emmys for the four seasons of the show and won Best Actress in a Golden Globe comedy in 1981.
