Uri: The Surgical Strike that wreaks havoc at the box office, has been declared duty free in the state of Uttar Pradesh, north of India. The film will be exempt from the state GST and viewers will continue to pay the central GST. This means that out of a total of 18% of the tax levied on cinema tickets priced above 100 rupees, the audience will only have to pay 9%. For movie tickets priced below 100 rupees, spectators will only pay 6% of taxes instead of the usual 12%.
Film critic and trade badyst Taran Adarsh shared the big news on his Twitter account on Tuesday. On the microblogging platform, Mr. Adarsh wrote: "#UriTheSurgicalStrike declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh … Exempt from the state GST. #UP #Uri #TaxFree "
This is certainly good news for the producers of Uri: The Surgical Strike because this decision should significantly boost the activity of the film. By the third week, the Uri: The Surgical Strike tickets are already priced at much lower rates than the newer versions and now that the SGST has been exempted, they will be even lower.
In such a scenario, the film could become the first choice of many moviegoers. No big news for the creators of Manikarnika: the queen of Jhansi and Thackeray who made an appearance Friday on the screens.
