NEW DELHI: BJP and Congress had a war on words of the armed forces on the line of control in September 2016, with Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad dismissing the opposition party's attack as the desperation of a "fringe player".

Congress accused the Modi government of using the surgical strikes as "political fodder" to gain votes. The party also listed eight similar strikes in the last two decades to claim that the 2016 strike was the first action of its kind. Party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said BJP chief Amit Shah had "dishonored" the 70-year-long history of bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces by making a "disgraceful statement" on October 7, 2016, that the "Indian Army had crossed the LoC for the first time in 68 years ".

He alleged that BJP "shamelessly politicized" the strikes for the March 2017 UP elections. Responding to the charge, Prasad said, "We would have wanted to derive political mileage out of the bravery of our jawans, we would have released the footage of strikes during badembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka." He also underlined that Congress, which was now criticizing the release of the Army's raids across the border to punish terrorists, had earlier doubted the authenticity of the "strikes".

"Congress has become so desperate with its repeated losses in elections that it has been repeatedly questioning the commitment and courage of our armed forces. It is boosting the morality of terrorists. To what extent will the Congress be stooped for votes? "Prasad asked while referring to the statements of Army officers confirming the authenticity of tapes.

The minister reminded Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's "khoon ki dalali" and said why they were irrelevant. Instead, he asked the rival party whether it considered the video or not.

"It is clear from its comments that it is a fringe player, a fringe party in national politics," he added.
