Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, who played the role of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his new biographical film, was not surprised by the scathing criticism that his film aroused. He says the public has adopted the glossy biopic.
"Even in a place like Cochin [Kochi, Kerala] where Modi or BJP did not win a single seat, the film was filled to the full. They saw the film with an open mind and are able to better understand the path of our Prime Minister, "said Oberoi in an interview with the tabloid Gulf News! Tuesday afternoon.
The actor was in Abu Dhabi for a special screening of Modi, followed by a press conference to talk more about it.
"The projection of yesterday was electric. During the interval, I could hear them sing "Modi, Modi". Everyone left the theater yesterday feeling patriotic. In places like Brisbane, London and New York, we have ovations, "said Oberoi, adding that congratulatory tweets on his schedule were not orchestrated.
Although the hero seems indecipherable, the critics have been rather cruel. He claims that negative reviews are biased and that critics simply express their dislike of the political leader rather than the film itself. According to reports, on the first day of its publication, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, led by Omung Kumar, reportedly collected 24.1 million rupees (1.27 million dirhams).
A few chosen people simply want to show Modi – who won by a huge margin in the recent elections of Lok Sabha – in a gloomy light.
Asked if the film was simply a fanboy tribute downplaying Modi's flaws in his political career, just as community riots under his supervision from the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Oberoi said that his film is not a documentary telling the facts and that it was a balanced story.
"For me, the story was simply inspiring. Imagine a child without a last name or sophisticated technical degree or a child who has never played the OBC card [Other Backward Caste] – he has dedicated his life to the nation and it is a source of inspiration. Through my film, I want people to feel patriotic. "
