Christies sets up 'giants of science' memorabilia sell off
The mind is gone but the flesh could be yours
The family of the late Stephen Hawking Professor is auctioning off some of his possessions – including an early version of his motorized wheelchair – to raise money for the charitable foundation that bears his name.
In all, 22 items from the Hawk will be up for grabs. These include a leather-clad motorized wheelchair the brainy Brit used in the late 1980s and early 1990s (so sadly not the one he used to roll over Prince Charles' toes), a copy of A Brief History of Time autographed with a thumb print , a copy of his 1965 PhD thesis, some of his science medals, and a copy of the script for his appearance on The Simpsons.
"We hope to be able to accept our fatherhood to the nation through the Acceptance in Lieu "said the Prof.'s daughter Lucy Hawking."
"We are also giving admirers of his work the chance to acquire a memento of (19659005) The Proceedings of the Neuronal Disease Association and the Stephen Hawking Foundation, which provides funding for disabled students in science and technology. . [19659009] Hawking “/>

Bidding is expected to be fierce for some items. Hawking's PhD thesis, which includes mathematical formulas shakily handwritten, has a guide price of £ 100,000 to 150,000 ($ 126,000 to $ 189,000) and could go a lot higher. Other scientific papers are priced at between £ 1,000 ($ 1,260) and £ 15,000 ($ 18,900), but there are cheaper and more expensive items on offer.
In 2009 Hawking tried a tongue-in-cheek when he decided to throw a party, and did not send the printed invitation to the event after the event. His reasoning was that only time travelers would be able to expect the shindig, and we would not know who he was.
"I'm hoping copies of it in one form or another will survive for many years , "Hawking said of the invitation, which currently stands at just £ 150 ($ 189). "Maybe one day someone living in the future will be able to come back to my party, one day, be possible."
If Hawking memorabilia is not your cup of the Christies auction, dubbed "On the Shoulders of Giants," also contains memorabilia from Einstein, Darwin, and Newton. Hawking's remains were buried this year to Sir Issac Newton: two geniuses thus lay to rest side by side in London's Westminster Abbey.
Included in the sale are some of Sir Isaac's writings on a £ 80,000 to £ 80,000 to £ 100,000 ($ 100,800 to $ 126,000), a selection of handwritten letters from Charles Darwin, and a 1925 postcard from Albert Einstein that's a snip at £ 1,000 ($ 1,260) and change.
Bidding starts on October 31, and you can see the full catalog right here. ®
