Wednesday's major league notebook: the Red Sox sign the former All-Star Phillips in a minor league affair

BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox have signed former All-Star second-baseman Brandon Phillips to a minor league contract on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old veteran, Phillips has not played in the majors or miners this season. Last year, with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels, he reached .285 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs.

Phillips will be heading to the Spring Training Base in Boston, Fort Myers, Florida to get in shape. The Red Sox said that he would then report to Triple-A Pawtucket.

He played 25 games at the shortstop and six games at the third base.

The Red Sox are looking for insurance for Dustin Pedroia, who underwent a procedure for restoring cartilage on his left knee last October and has only played three games this season before the fight. Inflammation does not require him to return to the list of the wounded.

Pedroia will meet his surgeon, Dr. Riley Williams, when the Red Sox will be in New York this weekend to make sure his recovery progresses as planned.

TIGERS: Detroit fired pitchers coach Chris Bosio, saying he had made insensitive comments to another employee of the team.

"I have to take the comments seriously," said the Tigres Al Avila general manager, refusing to give details. "And, the action we took was appropriate."

The Tigers promoted the reliever's coach, Rick Anderson, to replace Bosio. Traveling pitching instructor A.J. Sager will be the coach of the team until the Toledo Triple-A throws coach, Jeff Pico, takes his place next week.

Avila said what Bosio said violated the team's policy and his contract, although Avila spoke otherwise strongly about Bosio's work performance.

"He really was a good pitch coach," Avila said.

ROYALS: Kansas City placed reliever Justin Grimm on the 10-day wounded list due to an injury to the right shoulder and filled the right-handed spot by recalling Jason Adam of Triple-A Omaha.

PIRATES: Pittsburgh selected Triple-A Indianapolis right-handed tiller Tanner Anderson's contract and placed championship player Sean Rodriguez on the 10-day injury list.

Anderson, 25, is 1-1 with a 2.34 ERA over 24 appearances in Indianapolis with 24 strikeouts and six walks.

The Pirates said Rodriguez stretched his right quad and antedated the move to Monday. Rodriguez has only two hits in his last 38 battles.

ORIOLES: Baltimore placed reliever Darren O 'Day and outfielder Craig Gentry on the 10-day wounded list.

O 'Day was injured in the left thigh while he was beating a carp on Tuesday night and Gentry suffered a fracture of the left side when he was hit by a throw in Atlanta on Friday. .
