Brock Lesnar is a WWE polarizing star, as are Roman Reigns and John Cena. Fans love his "Supplex City" shtick and his way of dominating all the players with whom he is in the ring. However, they do not like it for the same reason that he dominates everyone in the ring because all his matches tend to become monotonous. Lesnar also played against WWE's part-time status, where he only participated in 4 shows a year.
Many critics and fans believe that Lesnar limits the opportunities that could be offered to younger superstars. He was cheered vehemently when he finally defeated Goldberg at WrestleMania 33 to win the WWE Universal Championship. However, all of this went wrong as Lesnar showed only sporadically to defend his title and his matches were considered boring.
His reign at the World Championship lasted more than a year and a half. Vince McMahon was criticized for placing the best part-time RAW championship while the series had been fighting without the Universal title for almost two years. WWE even played Lesnar's infrequent appearances in a script before he was finally defeated by Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. But after Reigns's illness, things returned to normal: Lesnar won the title again and defended it only once in almost three months.
Eric Bischoff, former director of WWE, spoke about the reign of the Lesnar World Championship since April 2017 and its impact on the RAW scene. He called the championship "meaningless" because of Brock's status on a part-time basis.
"I do not think that the fact that Brock Lesnar holds the Universal title or not does not matter and that nobody cares about this title." Said Bischoff. "It does not mean anything. We do not care? I think people care about Brock. I think he's a tough guy, and a larger-than-life character, and so unbeatable that the world is waiting to see who and if someone will come and overthrow him from his throne. But I do not think Bischoff would be a rival for Vince McMahon during the WCW-WWE days and that he would know how the booking works, those encounters if the belt was not part of it, "Bischoff said on the podcast "After 83 weeks".
Brock Lesnar must now defend the World Championship against Finn Balor this Sunday at the Royal Rumble. It is strongly badumed that Brock would retain the title to defend it later at WrestleMania 35.
