Six people were killed and one was seriously injured in what local authorities are calling a “mass murder” in Indianapolis on Sunday morning.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a call to 911 just before 4 a.m. Sunday, reporting that an individual had been shot in the 3300 block of East 36th Street.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a boy with a gunshot wound. The boy, who was taken to a nearby local hospital in critical condition, is expected to survive his injuries.
Upon obtaining more information, officers were directed to the 3500 block of Adams Street where they found several people shot inside a house, including a pregnant woman who was immediately transported to a nearby hospital.

Police have confirmed that the woman, her unborn child and other victims inside the home have all been pronounced dead.
“There are no right words to say right now, a time when our community has to come to terms with the highest number of injured in more than a decade,” IMPD Chief Randal Taylor said during a press conference on Sunday afternoon. “My heart is broken myself for the lives that were taken too soon, for the young life that was forever changed, and for the life that never had the chance to begin.”
Seargeant Shane Foley added that the incident “does not appear to be a random act” and that an investigation into the incident is ongoing, with active detectives at the scene roaming the area looking for witnesses or anyone with more information.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the incident was not “a mere act of gun violence”.
“What happened this morning was a mass murder,” Hogsett said. “A choice of an individual or individuals to bring, and I do not use these words lightly, terror in our community.”
Additionally, Hogsett said he contacted the US Attorney’s Office and the FBI to assist with the investigation and issued a stern warning to the individual or individuals responsible for the incident that “justice will be done.”
“I want officials to know that the full power of local and federal law enforcement is available to them as I speak,” Hogsett added. “Come for them today, come for them tonight, come for them tomorrow and the next day. Come for them as long as it takes to find them, and we won’t stop there.”
Police will also determine whether the firearms involved in the incident were illegally held and identify anyone responsible for their supply as well as anyone who has or chooses to help and encourage the person (s) involved.
“We will not stop until whoever is complicit in this act of violence is held accountable,” Hogsett added.
