Indianapolis Police Investigate Mass Murder

Indianapolis police are investigating a mass shooting that left five dead and the unborn baby of a pregnant woman and a community in shock at what the mayor called “an evil act.”

Authorities provided little information on the victims or the motive, but said the FBI and federal prosecutors had been alerted.

“I want officials to know that all the power of local, state and federal law enforcement is coming for them as I speak,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett.

“Come for them today, come and get them tonight, come get them tomorrow and the next day.”

Police said the mass murder took place before 4 a.m. on Sunday. Cops were called to report a boy with gunshot wounds in the street. While this victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition, investigators went to a nearby house where they found the others shot dead.

Among those killed was a pregnant woman who was rushed to hospital, but she and her unborn child could not be saved, police said in an afternoon briefing .

No motive was given for the city’s worst shooting in over a decade, but authorities said it was not a random act.

“I want to be very clear on something: what happened this morning was not a simple act of armed violence,” said the mayor. “What happened this morning was a mass murder, the choice of one or more individuals to bring – and I don’t use those words lightly – terror in our community.

While officials pleaded for advice that would lead them to the culprit, Hogsett said police would determine if any guns involved in the incident were illegal and hold vendors accountable and also arrest anyone harboring the shooter or shooters.

“We will not stop until whoever is complicit in this act of violence has been held fully responsible,” he said.
