Indians Choose Wilson Ramos – MLB Trade Rumors

Indians chose veteran catcher contract Wilson ramos, according to MLB.com’s Mandy Bell (Twitter link). Starting backstop Roberto Perez makes the 10-day injured list with inflammation of the right shoulder. Cleveland already has three openings on the 40-man roster, so no further movement was needed in that regard.

Ramos opened the season with the division rivals Tigers after signing a one-year contract during the offseason. He got off to a good start, but his bat faded out after the first two weeks of the season. Ultimately, Ramos hit 0.200 / 0.238 / 0.392 in 128 home plate appearances for Detroit before missing more than a month with spine strain. Upon his activation from the casualty list, the Tigers nominated Ramos for posting and then released him. He hooked up with Cleveland on a minor league deal soon after.

The two-time All-Star made his return to the majors (ironically starting with this weekend’s streak against Detroit) with a strong showing for the Indians’ main affiliate in Columbus. Ramos made 62 flat trips with the Clippers and posted a line of 0.317 / 0.328 / 0.517. He’s only shot one base in that span, but he’s also had three home runs and has only been hit six times. Ramos will offer a first bat save option behind a defensive specialist Austin Hurdles while Pérez is away.

Cleveland did not provide a timeline for Pérez’s return. It will be his second IT stint of the season, as the 32-year-old also missed sixty days with a broken finger to his right hand between May and July. During the year, it only reaches 0.136 / 0.246 / 0.318.
