Indie Studio NOWWA accuses Apex Legends of “ripping off” one of its characters

Fuse - Apex Legends

Respawn Entertainment and EA, the developer and publisher behind the popular battle royale Apex Legends, have been accused of ripping a character from the upcoming indie shooter, BulletCity.

Apex Legends, which could launch on Switch as early as next month, is expected to introduce the new character Fuse as part of its eighth season on February 2. NOWWA, the team behind BulletVille, says they found the character “quite familiar,” noting his “eye patch, biker outfit, head belt, mechanical arm, mustache, grenade belt, gloves, collar, jacket with circular symbol on the back, leg holsters, red / gray color scheme, and characteristic gray hair band. “

The team points out that Hunter, a BulletVille character, has been public for almost two years, and that Apex Legends’ Fuse “seems to share a lot of similarities” with his own design. The accusations go further, as NOWWA explains that BulletVille gaming tests took place with EA in October and November 2020 – which she says “reinforces the theory of a potential ‘inspiration’.”

NOWWA shared the following statement on this to Nintendo Life, attaching an image of the two characters side by side:

“We’re glad the Apex Legends team liked Hunter’s style so much that they wanted to recreate it in Apex Legends – we were even hoping for a possible crossover!” Nonetheless, we are concerned that as a small indie game producer whose game has yet to launch, we are being labeled an Apex Legends scam, which is certainly not true.

“Hunter can count on two weapons: a pistol and a rocket launcher. Guess what is Fuse’s ultimate ability?” NOWWA says. “A rocket launcher.”

We’ve reached out to EA’s Apex Legends PR team for feedback and will update this story if we receive a response.
