TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Former world No. 1 badminton athlete Lee Chong Wei wants to participate again after healing his nose cancer. He also considered the opportunity to win a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
At a press conference Thursday, the three-time Olympic silver medalist from Malaysia said she did not intend to resign from badminton.
"I love this sport and I want to go back and prepare for the next tournament, but how fast it will depend on my condition," said Lee Chong Wei at the first press conference since the diagnosis of illness in September.
"The doctor advised me to follow him slowly, and I have to follow him (…) .I started with a light workout at home.Of course, the Olympic gold remains my target and my dream, "said the 36-year-old.
Lee, who won gold this year at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, also hopes to return to the All England tournament next March.
He was treated in Taiwan and lost five pounds. "It's a tough time for me, thanks to the support of my family, my friends and my fans who hope I get back fast, it's important," said Lee, eighth in the BWF world rankings.
