Jakarta – More than 400 Google employees have signed an open letter asking Google to cancel the development of its search engine for the Chinese market.

According to hundreds of Google employees, the search engine under development violates human rights because it authorizes the censorship of certain parties, in this case the Chinese government.

A letter originally signed by only 11 people a day managed to get 400 signatures, most of them software engineers. A similar letter had already been made in early 2019 and had managed to collect 1400 signatures.

The search engine project mentioned in the letter is called Project Dragonfly, a Google search engine specially designed for China. This search engine can block a number of keywords, which will make it easier for governments to organize searches made by the public.

Google itself has repeatedly declined to comment on Dragonfly, and said the project was still in the testing stage and that it could not launch search engine in the near future.

Dragonfly did not only reap the protests of Google internally. The former US Vice President, Mike Pence, condemned this search engine, reportedly detikINET of the penisThursday (29/11/2018).
