TEMPO.CO, Bandung – The paleontology team of the Bandung Institute of Geological Technology (ITB) kept the place of discovery of a giant ivory pair from Stegodon, an ancient elephant.

They and locals found it in March-April last in a place in the Majalengka region, in western Java. They have three reasons to hide it.
The first reason, said Jahdi Zaim, head of the ITB Paleontology Laboratory, has not been published in scientific journals. "So we can not yet say where he is," he said on the ITB campus on Friday, December 21, 2018.
Second argument, the team continues its field studies on the excavation site. They still want to find a fossil body and a skull of stegodon that possesses giant ivory. "We are always cautious until we can get complete data, the research will never stop, and some conclusions will be sustainable," he said.
The third reason is to anticipate the practice of buying and selling fossils from this place. "We must protect not only the nature but also the commercialization of the community," said Jahdi. As far as I know in West Java, the merchandising of fossils is not comparable to that practiced in other excavation sites. "In Central Java, it was extraordinary."
According to Jahdi, paleontological research is in desperate need of original or in situ conditions for good scientific data to be obtained. The fossils that are rife are marketed in West Java, as in Sukabumi. "That's what we try not to come in. If we find it with ignorant hands like that, who will even later enjoy strangers," he said. Anticipation is also a form of effort to save fossils.
