Mutlu-Pakdil grew up in Turkey. He attended Besiktaş Atatürk Anatolian High School before continuing his studies at Bilkent University of Ankara in 2009. This lecture was a luxury for Mutlu-Pakdil. He was the first generation of his family to go to university, as he said in a joint interview Inc.. April 9, 2018:
My grandparents lived in a small farming town. They do not even have the opportunity to learn to read or write. My parents grew up in these cities. Because of the economic pressure, they are supposed to help their families. During this period, most of the students were in elementary school until the age of 18, since most of them were more occupied with agriculture.
My dad is different because he's so smart that he can skip multiple levels in elementary school. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave school after the fifth year to take care of his parents. My mother also left school after the fifth grade because at that time, women were not supposed to have a higher education in their environment.
The experience of my parents has motivated me to achieve my dream and my family has always encouraged me. I fought very hard during my early years, but I eventually learned to overcome this social and academic transition. I have good achievements and I can enter the best Turkish universities in physics with full scholarships.
Triple minority
When Mutlu-Pakdil said "fight hard", he did not try to be heroic. With his immigrant status for Muslim women, he also participated in a male-dominated study. Mutlu-Pakdil has often been discriminated against and underestimated by other academics. He said:
Unfortunately, it's something very common in both countries [Turki dan Amerika]. It does not matter that it is a scientific conference or a public discussion, recapitulation (attitude of a man who explains something to a woman with an impression of disdain) is a common phenomenon.
Some people tried to explain a study, some did not believe in my credibility and questioned my sources or data, others did not even let me talk and only looked for ways to talk about what they were doing.
Faculty members and mentors are very important to first-generation students so that they can realize their potential. Unfortunately, I did not accept such support structures. On the first day of college, a male teacher questioned my presence in clbad saying, "Are you crazy? Are you a woman who left her hometown to study physics? I remember the story of my parents every time they face this challenge and continue to struggle to pursue my dreams.
And Mutlu-Pakdil managed to do it. In 2012, he earned his MSc in Astrophysics at Texas Tech University in the United States. In 2017, he earned a PhD from the University of Minnesota with a research entitled: "Supermbadive Scaling Relationships of Black Holes Using Cosmological Simulations and Data Testing". Optical imaging / near-IR ".
In 2017, Mutlu-Pakdil was appointed postdoctoral researcher at the Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona, responsible for observing the structure and dynamics of astrophysical objects, of various galaxies of small size, galactic rings and supermbadive black holes. Mutlu-Pakdil has also been named president of Women in Astronomy and ambbadador for the American Astronomical Society.
Since 2018, Mutlu-Pakdil has been collaborating with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in the production of a series of short films on science and astronomy for the general public. TED – a global conference organized by non-profit organizations, the Sapling Foundation – bringing together inspiring figures from around the world, has announced the appointment of Mutlu-Pakdil as an honorary member. In April 2018 he also gave lectures at the event.
The PGC 1000714 galaxy was discovered by Mutlu-Pakdil while he was completing his PhD studies in 2017. The very rare double-ring elliptical galaxy bears the name of the inventor: Burcin Galaxy.
PGC 1000714 Galaxy is it?
It is expected that the galaxy PGC 1000714 will be more than 5.5 billion years old. The celestial body located less than 359 million light years from Earth is red and surrounded by a pale blue ring.
Originally, it was believed that the PGC 1000714 still belonged to the Hoag type or Hoag's Object – feared by Arthur Allen Hoag who discovered it in 1950. Hoag's Object is the first example of a type of galaxy surrounded by circular rings from a collection of blue stars. These types of galaxies are very rare, only 0.1% of all galaxies have already been observed.
However, when Mutlu-Pakdil and his team learned more about the PGC 1000714 galaxy, they began to discover some facts, one of which was the inside ring of old age. Therefore, it is badumed that these galaxies are formed first and are therefore different from other known galaxies.
"Different colors of the outer and inner rings show that these galaxies are experiencing two different formations," said Mutlu-Pakdil during the discovery of the galaxy, as stated in the report. Independent (Wednesday / 04/01/2017).
The discovery of galaxy PGC 1000714 is very important. By comprehensively studying the structure of the galaxy, scientists can not only determine the age and formation of a galaxy, but can also help better understand how the universe works.
"Whenever we discover a single or strange object to learn, it will certainly call into question theories and current badumptions about the functioning of the universe. We still have a lot to learn," said Patrick Treuthardt, l & # 39, one of Mutlu-Pakdil's fellow researchers. on the team that he directs.
Whatever the results of the Mutlu-Pakdil team's ongoing research, he has managed to continue in the footsteps of other progressive Muslim women such as Mona Haydar, rapper and an American-Syrian activist who played the song "Hijabi", Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first American hijab athlete to have participated and won a medal at the Olympic Games (2016), to Zahra Lari, athlete ice skating the first hijab of the United Arab Emirates which is only 23 years old.
For them, the combination of achievements and the hijab – which becomes the embodiment of faith and obedience – also becomes a symbol of progressive attitude.
