Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The obligation to locate data centers remains a heated debate to this day. Many parties felt that the modification made by the Ministry of Communication and Information to PP No. 82 of 2012 would harm Indonesia as it did not require the installation of data centers in the country.
However, Tony Seno, National Technology Manager at Microsoft Indonesia, has another opinion. He added that the pressure to install data centers in the country could actually slow the pace of business that is currently developing in Indonesia, especially e-commerce companies.
"The consideration is rather economical. If you talk about PP 82 and that there are penalties, he has to use a data center in Indonesia, you can not use cloud computing, which means be expensive, people do not use it and if no one uses it, companies in Indonesia will die, "he told the Sheraton Gandaria Hotel Jakarta on Tuesday (11/27/2018).
Tony argues that providing data centers requires a lot of time and money. This then becomes a consideration for many companies, especially startups, preferring to place data in the cloud rather than creating their own data center.

"The data center is needed to store the servers, store the storage and all the computer peripherals in a special room. There must be an air conditioning that must be maintained at 15 degrees Celsius because otherwise the server will be quickly damaged." he declared.
Tony added that supplying data centers also required electricity with special units that could not fluctuate. Not to mention, a great room for placing physical data centers that are usually very large.
"If we look at this, the cost of activating the data center is very important – imagine electricity paid every month," he said.
Therefore, Tony considers the need for data storage in sync with the current era through cloud technology. According to him, there are several cloud benefits that can be used by businessmen.
First, access can be done anywhere, even in the whole world. Tony said that the existence of cloud technology connected to a large data center in a number of countries makes access to data stored in it unlimited.
"Instead of having its own data center, Microsoft, for example, has many data centers in many countries, this data center can be used and using cloud technology, this data center is accessible from the world, "he said.
Second, flexible use of data and as needed. Tony gave an example, if at that time the user needed only one server, then that a sudden change was made to require a thousand or so of servers, this number could be provided directly in a few minutes.
Third, funding is much more efficient and effective. Without providing hardware devices at a cost that is certainly not minimal, via the cloud, funding is set according to the amount of user usage. For example, monthly rental fees are capacity dependent if you use data storage services such as iCloud.
"So, if we use it small, the salary will be too, no use, no need to pay, and if you use a lot, pay a lot, too," Tony said.
