Indonesia presents ways to rehabilitate coral reefs around the world

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Organizations engaged in the rehabilitation of coral reefs, Biorock Indonesia explains how to rehabilitate coral reefs during the Asia-Pacific Ocean Day. This institution has been engaged for nearly two decades in rehabilitating coral reefs in various parts of Indonesia.

"We have long experience and effective methods to grow coral reefs faster," said Ricky Ismail Soerapoetra, representative of Biorock Indonesia, in a written statement on Monday, November 26, 2018. This event was organized by the United States. United Nations Organization for Economic and Social Development. Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP). The Asia Pacific Ocean Day was held at the North Conference Center in Bangkok, Thailand on November 20, 2018.

According to ESCAP, the Asia-Pacific region is home to most of the productive biodiversity and the marine economy. From fishing to maritime tourism, the sea becomes a vital source of life, employment, nutrition and economic growth that play an important role in the climate balance.

"This is what we want to share to contribute to future efforts to improve coral reefs," Ricky said. "Marine and coastal ecosystems are the frontline of human defense against storms and floods, and a very rich source of biodiversity for the Earth."

According to the latest data from the Coral Reef Management and Rehabilitation Program (COREMAP) team launched in 2017, Indonesia is expanding over 2.5 million hectares of coral reefs , with a rich variety of corals including 569 species from 82 genera. This number reaches 67% of the total 845 species of corals in the world.

Indonesia occupies an important place in the coral triangle area that extends into Indonesian waters, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. It was agreed in 2009 in the Coral Triangle Coral Reef Initiative's (CFC-CFF) Fishing and Feeding Program.

"Indonesia, which is one of the largest martimim countries in the region, is certainly an important contributor.Biorock Indonesia continues to bet on communities directly related to the concept of the blue economy and affected by this one, "Ricky said.
