IPhone sales in India are expected to decline by a quarter over the next holiday season, which will be the first in four years, according to industry researcher, Counterpoint.

Apple's fight to penetrate the Indian market with 1.3 billion people is becoming a concern this week after Apple has attributed weak sales forecasts for several emerging markets.

CEO Tim Cook said in his third quarter report that sales in India had not increased in the fourth quarter, which also included the holiday season with a peak in Diwali where electronic sales are expected to increase.

Neil Shah, director of research at Counterpoint Research, said the sales figure would be between 700,000 and 800,000, down from one million last year.

According to Shah, Apple is expected to sell 2 million mobile phones, a million less than last year.

"Sales will go down for the first time in four years," said Shah.

"If you look at the third quarter last year, the figure was 900,000, up from nearly 450,000 this year."

"The iPhone is becoming more inaccessible and features and specifications are not as convincing. The Android user base is growing rapidly while the new Apple user base does not arrive. "
