Jokowi at our conference on the ocean 2018: we are the baharian nation

TEMPO.CO, Badung – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) opens the Our Ocean 2018 conference to be held from October 29 to 30, 2018 at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center. In his opening remarks, he began by addressing all conference participants.

"I am aware that our country is a maritime country.I am aware that our water area is larger than the land.We are all aware that the water region on our land is larger than the land. Let's all realize that the sea is our future, our ocean, our future, "said Jokowi at the opening of the conference.

At the opening, Jokowi wore a black batik adorned with a fish motif. The same batik was also imposed by the Minister for the Coordination of Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan.

Jokowi said the sea was the most valuable badet for the world. He said that more than 90% of world trade is by sea. In addition, 40% of the value of world trade is by sea. And 61% of the world's oil is distributed by sea.

"The value of marine wealth is estimated at $ 24 trillion," said Jokowi. "It's not the resources that are in the sea." According to him, half of the world's population depends on the sea. According to Jokowi, this is the picture of the importance of the sea for humankind.

However, said Jokowi, the world is facing various maritime challenges. "Crime is widespread, illegal fishing, for example, the FAO estimates that there are 26 million tons of fish caught.The value reaches 10 to 23 US dollars," he said. "Not to mention piracy, human trafficking, etc."

According to Jokowi, maritime land claims can also be a matter of sustainable stability of the sea. Therefore, he said, international law must be respected to solve these problems.

"Marine health is also important," said the 57-year-old president. Jokowi mentioned several issues that affect marine health. Among other things, namely marine pollution, plastic waste, climate change that causes coral bleaching and rising sea surface temperatures. "Do not let us handle the sea too late."

Jokowi pointed out that a country can not handle a series of problems. "This requires the cooperation of all countries – we need a global partnership, global cooperation to achieve global sustainable development," he said.

He said the world needed a mental revolution to manage the sea. And the OOC, he said, must be the engine of the mental revolution to take care of the sea.

President Jokowi said that Indonesia is determined to be a global maritime force. "We have done a lot of things: marine tolls, marine fleet strengthening, 70% reduction of marine litter by 2025. And 20 million hectares of marine conservation areas by 2018, two years before the target, "said Jokowi.

In addition, Jokowi explained that Indonesia also promotes global maritime cooperation on various occasions, including to IORA and the UN. "In the future, Indonesia wants to be a driving force for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region," he said.

Therefore, he said, all OCO participants must make commitments. Of course, he said, the commitments and actions that the lau community can feel and have a real impact on the sea.
