BOGOR – The Government of Indonesia and Micronesia has agreed to strengthen cooperation in maritime and inter-island connectivity. The cooperation was established because Indonesia and Micronesia are two archipelagic countries.

"At the bilateral meeting, we discussed various efforts to improve cooperation as island countries, we agreed to increase cooperation in the field of maritime and inter-island connectivity," said the president. Joko Widodo (Jokowi). West Java, Wednesday (18/7/2018).

Jokowi said that Indonesia and Micronesia have a lot of similarities, although the distance is far enough. One of them who has a lot of islands. Micronesia has 600 islands and Indonesia has 17,000 islands.

According to him, Indonesia is also familiar with the President of Micronesia Peter M. Christian. The reason is that Peter has the blood of Indonesian Keturuanan, the third generation of the Maluku descendants in Micronesia.

Peter will also take the time to go home to Ambon, Maluku. According to Jokowi, it is a proof that the links between the peoples of the two countries were intertwined tens, if not hundreds of years ago.

"The visit of President Christian to Indonesia marks a new stage in relations between the two countries, a relationship of mutual respect and benefit," he said.

Jokowi acknowledges having honored the Micronesian commitment to honor the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia. He affirmed that the Government of Indonesia and Micronesia have agreed to strengthen cooperation for various forums in the South Pacific, among others, the cooperation of the Pacific Island Forum.

Meanwhile, Christian says that Micronesia and Indonesia have established warm diplomatic relations for 27 years. He wants the long-established relationship to tighten. "We want to develop a closer relationship between the two countries," said Christian.

Christian considers that there has been a lot of cooperation between Micronesia and Indonesia, among other things, student exchange and economic improvement. Moreover, he admits that Micronesia is a very limited human resource.

"We are grateful to the Indonesian government for providing economic badistance to help develop our country," he said.
