Mediatek products for the 5G chipset will be present in early 2019

This modem is quite successful in achieving Mediatek's ambition to provide 5G modems to Apple as the Iphone now uses an external modem chip (using Intel). For information, Qualcomm also has an external modem.

However, chipset-integrated modems are preferred because they reduce overall costs. While Apple has "extra money" for external modems, other mobile phone manufacturers operate with thin margins, so the selection of a modem also involves cost reduction efforts.

Mediatek is preparing to modify the research and development budget to develop 5G technology while waiting for the right moment, as this industry is in a period of transition. The investment in the 5G is expected to exceed the investment in 4G.
