Moscow – The Russian government said that Google had violated the law because it did not remove banned sites from search results. Here is the story.
reported detikINET Reuters announced on Wednesday (28/11/2018) that the Russian communication agency Roskomnadzor had declared that Google was not affiliated with a special list of banned sites. The Russian government has asked these sites themselves to hold illegal information so that Google is considered a violation of the law.
The Russian government has launched a civil case against Google. If found guilty, the company based in Mountain View must pay a fine of 700,000 rubles (152 million rubles).
The fine looks very small compared to Google's annual revenue in 2017, which reached 109 billion USD (1,578 billion rupees).
However, the Russian government is currently developing rules that will later impose heavier fines. If approved, leading technology companies such as Google and Facebook may be fined 1% of their annual revenue.
The decision on Google's guilt or not should be dropped in December.
This is not the first time that Google is sanctioned by Google. In 2016, Google was fined 6.75 million USD (97 billion Rp) for the violation of anti-monopoly law on its Android operating system.
