Measles is spread by coughing and sneezing, but this virus can stay in the air for two hours after the sick person leaves and is still contagious. Patients can transmit measles for four days before experiencing rashes themselves.

In the United States, measles has risen sharply over the past two decades, mostly because of people traveling to areas prone to measles. Orange County authorities also used a number of public places and locations to monitor the vaccination history and determine if there were any measles symptoms among employees and visitors.
