BANDA ACEH – Two residents of West Aceh, suffering from a rare disease, malaria. The disease was contracted in long-tailed monkeys during its activity in the forest.
The two residents with malaria were married couples in Panton Reu district, western Aceh, suspected of being infected with malaria while active in the forest.
Azwar Liza, head of the malaria control program at the West Aceh Health Unit, said the spouses often caught fish at night and that they were exposed to the mosquito responsible for the mosquito. malaria.
"Last night (both) we gave the drug and are still being treated for the next three days to make sure we have no parasites in the blood," Azwar Liza said Thursday (29.11.2018 ).
This case of malaria was discovered for the first time in West Aceh. Previously, this case had been discovered in a locality of about 100 inhabitants who exhibited the same symptoms of illness, namely a high fever. But after taking blood samples, only two people were tested positive for malaria.
"Fortunately, Plasmodium Knowlesi can not be pbaded from man to man, but only from monkeys to humans," Azwar explained.
Plasmodium knowlesi means parasite of the genus Plasmodium, which naturally infects long-tailed monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). According to him, people infected by malaria are caused by the breeding of monkeys infected with malaria parasites.
In addition, there are mosquitoes that bite the monkey, and mosquitoes come back to sting humans. At present, the local health unit has made various referral efforts to prevent the transmission and spread of this rare vision.
Azwar also appealed, if there was a feverish community, to immediately conduct an examination at the Puskesmas or at the hospital for treatment.
In addition, to prevent this disease, miners and forest workers are required to systematically submit to malaria control.
